It's not you, it's physics
Every time you sit down, your body pushes the seat sideways, not just downward. Engineers refer to this as a transverse load. Most toilet seats have two hinge bolts that hold them in place. And those bolts are designed mostly to support weight straight down. They are not designed to handle sideways force nearly as well, and that is what happens each time someone sits down and shifts their weight.

This is not some random defect; it's a well-documented mechanical problem. In 1969, German engineer Gerhard Junker published a paper about threaded fasteners that is still widely cited today. He found something surprising: a sideways force makes bolts come loose much faster than a straight down force. This research paper is now commonly referred to as the Junker test for self-loosening fasteners and is used to describe how repeated sideways motion can loosen bolts over time. It works much like a toilet seat hinge, because each time someone uses the toilet, a small sideways force occurs. Those small nudges add up over weeks and months.
There is another factor, too. Many modern toilet seat bolts are made of plastic rather than metal, partly to avoid scratching the porcelain underneath and partly because plastic won't corrode the way older metal bolts sometimes do. But plastic also creeps under repeated stress, meaning it slowly deforms and loses its grip over time, even without anyone applying extra force to it.
How to know if it's the hinge or something else
It helps to know precisely where the movement is coming from before you grab a wrench. Sit in the seat and try pushing it gently side to side. If it moves along with the hinge section near the back of the bowl, the trouble is likely in the bolts under the seat, and tightening them may solve it. However, if the movement affects only the front part of the seat and the hinge itself is tight enough, it means that worn-out bumper pads are causing the problem rather than loose bolts. Creaking sounds or hairline cracks near the hinge may indicate damage to the plastic itself, and tightening the bolts will only be a temporary fix.

Once the problem is identified, the solution is relatively straightforward. Start by removing the small plastic caps covering the bolts on the back of the seat. They should come off with light pressure. Then hold the bolt steady with a screwdriver from above and tighten the nut underneath with your hands or pliers. Tighten the nut firmly, but do not overtighten it, because plastic bolts can break under strain. After that, replace the caps and test the seat again. If the bolts spin freely without tightening, the threads have probably stripped. In this case, it is best to replace the hinges rather than continuing the battle against stripped bolts.
Keep it from happening again
A quick fix is helpful, but simple habits can reduce how often the seat loosens. Each time you close the lid, it can jolt the hinge and speed up the loosening process described in Junker's research. So it’s best to lower the lid slowly to help the bolts stay tight longer. Some home improvement stores sell special kits where the hinge bolts are made of metal, unlike the usual plastic ones. Metal doesn't creep as easily as plastic does, and therefore it will maintain its tension for a longer stretch. Adding a thin rubber washer between the hinge bolts and the bowl can also help by increasing friction and reducing the sideways movement that starts the loosening.
A sliding toilet seat may not seem like much of a problem at home, but simple physics is at work: repeated sideways pressure can loosen the screws over time. Once you understand the cause, it is easy to fix. Grab your screwdriver and pliers, tighten those bolts up, and the wobble should be gone for for good, or at least for a long while.
