So, how can you keep those marks from appearing in the first place? A few simple cleaning habits and preventive tricks can help keep your stainless steel refrigerator looking pristine for longer.
How to keep fingerprints at bay
If you are tired of wiping fingerprints from your refrigerator only to see new ones appear hours later, a few small habits can make a noticeable difference. According to Martha Stewart, Samantha Shpeen, chief home officer at sustainable cleaning brand Cleancult, says the key is to think about prevention, not just removal. “Fingerprints form when oils meet the steel’s smooth surface,” Shpeen says. “So prevention is key.” One of her suggestions is to add a protective buffing step after cleaning.
“After cleaning, buff with a dry microfiber cloth or a tiny drop of mineral oil for a light, protective sheen,” she says. “A quick daily wipe with a gentle cleaner keeps smudges from settling and cuts down on deep cleans.”
That light layer of oil can create a barrier between skin oils and the steel, helping reduce smudges which makes cleaning a easy work in future. Shpeen recommends using the oil sparingly, with a pea-sized amount on a microfiber cloth.
How to start cleaning
Before trying to prevent fingerprints, it helps to clean the stainless steel correctly. Stainless steel has a subtle directional grain, similar to natural wood, and Shpeen says following it is key to achieving a streak-free finish.
“The key is to clean with the grain, not against it,” she explains, as quoted by Martha Stewart. “Start with a soft microfiber cloth and a pH-balanced cleaner, harsh chemicals or overly oily products can cause streaks. Spray lightly, wipe in long, even motions following the steel’s direction, and then buff dry with a clean cloth.”
Instead of wiping in circles or making random swipes across the door, follow the direction of the grain. This can help maintain a more even finish and shine. A two-cloth approach can also help. Use one microfiber cloth for cleaning and another for drying and buffing.
