Meet Sanjay Ghemawat, cofounder of AI startup Discovery Loop
Computer scientist Sanjay Ghemawat is among the co-founders of Discovery Loop, the artificial intelligence startup launched by longtime Google executives Jeff Dean, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le alongside Ghemawat. The Indian-origin scientist spent more than two decades at Google, where he worked on some of the company’s foundational distributed computing and AI technologies.

The Indian-origin scientist spent more than two decades at Google, where he worked on some of the company’s foundational distributed computing and AI technologies.
According to Ghemawat’s Google Research profile, his research has focused on distributed systems, machine intelligence, software systems and TensorFlow.
Ghemawat joined Google in 1999 after completing a PhD in Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Before joining Google, he was a researcher at Digital Equipment Corporation’s Systems Research Centre.
During his time at Google, Ghemawat co-authored several influential research papers on large-scale computing systems. He was a co-author of the Google File System (GFS) paper published in 2003, which described the distributed file system designed to support Google’s large-scale processing needs.
He also co-authored the 2004 paper on MapReduce, a programming model for processing and generating large datasets across clusters of computers. The system became one of Google’s core technologies for large-scale data processing.
Ghemawat was also a co-author of the Bigtable paper in 2006, which outlined Google’s distributed storage system to manage structured data. He later contributed to the 2012 Spanner paper, describing Google’s globally distributed database.
More recently, his work included TensorFlow, Google’s open-source machine learning framework, and Pathways, the company’s AI architecture designed to support large-scale machine learning models.
According to his Google Research profile, Ghemawat has received several honours, including election to the National Academy of Engineering, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) fellow distinction, and the ACM Prize in Computing.
