US Department of State launches online portal to report suspected visa fraud and misuse

The US Department of State has launched an online portal for members of the public to report suspected visa fraud and misuse, allowing authorities to review information and take action against alleged violations.

The department said many of the tens of thousands of visa fraudsters it had identified and held accountable during President Donald Trump's second term were discovered through tips from members of the public.

The new portal offers a convenient way to submit information about suspected cases for prompt review and action, the department said.

In a statement, the Department of State said its Bureau of Consular Affairs was conducting fraud detection and prevention activities to stop people from travelling to the US through fraudulent means or for illegal purposes.

It said suspected visa fraud could include the use of falsified documents or travel plans, sham marriages arranged by brokers, shell companies, fabricated job offers and engaging in or facilitating birth tourism.

The department said visa fraud could harm American communities, undermine the US economy and workers, and jeopardise national security and public safety.

It added that the US would enforce its laws and hold violators accountable, including through visa revocations and referrals for further law enforcement investigations.

The department urged people with information about suspected visa fraud or misuse to submit it through the new portal, travel.state.gov/reportvisafraud.

Tommy Pigott, a spokesperson for the Department of State, in a post on X, announced the initiative. In his statement, he said, “A U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right. @StateDept is launching a dedicated portal where you can report visa fraud and misuse. Help protect our national interests and crack down on visa abuse."
