Jetstar to charge extra for overhead cabin bags from February

Jetstar, the low-cost airline owned by Australia's national carrier Qantas, will start charging passengers for storing larger carry-on bags in overhead lockers from February as it changes its cabin baggage policy.

Under the new policy, passengers can continue to bring one small bag, such as a backpack, handbag or laptop bag, that fits under the seat at no extra cost. Those who want to carry a larger bag in the overhead locker will have to pay between A$25 and A$52 per flight, depending on the route.

The change aligns Jetstar's baggage policy with several low-cost airlines worldwide that include only a small under-seat bag in the base fare and charge extra for overhead locker space.


Passengers who need additional cabin baggage can buy the airline's "Priority Carry-on" option before travel. This includes a larger bag for the overhead locker, early boarding and removes the previous 7-kg carry-on weight limit.

The airline said the decision followed customer and crew research, which found that weighing bags at boarding gates and competing for overhead locker space were among the most stressful parts of the airport experience.

Jetstar said the new system is expected to improve on-time departures by making boarding more efficient and using overhead locker space more effectively.

Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully said the changes support the airline's low-fare model.

"You only pay for what you need — travelling with less means paying less, and you can always add more if you need," she said in a statement.

Airlines increasingly earn revenue from optional services such as baggage, excess luggage, seat selection and priority boarding. Consumer groups have criticised these charges, saying advertised base fares do not always reflect the total cost of travel.
