Caracas airport to resume commercial flights on September 1 after earthquake damage

Maiquetia International Airport, which serves Venezuela’s capital Caracas, will resume commercial flights on September 1, according to the airport announcement. The development comes nearly two months after the airport was damaged by twin earthquakes that killed more than 6,500 people and left thousands missing.

The airport in La Guaira state was among the areas worst affected by the June 24 quakes. Both domestic and international flights will restart from temporary terminals as authorities work to restore operations.

The earthquakes caused major damage to airport infrastructure, including the main runway. The damage forced the airport to handle only humanitarian flights for several weeks, while commercial air traffic was redirected to smaller regional airports.

The airport has since established two temporary departure terminals and two arrival terminals in large tents outside the damaged buildings.

The reopening will restore Venezuela’s main international air link after weeks of disruption caused by the earthquake damage.
