Australia opens Consulate-General in Bengaluru; UNSW launches campus in city

Bengaluru: Australia on Friday inaugurated its Consulate-General office in Bengaluru, plans to deepen its engagement with Karnataka in trade, education, research, innovation and technology.

Karnataka Industries Minister MB Patil said in a statement the new office will strengthen Karnataka-Australia ties and create new opportunities for collaboration.

Patil also inaugurated the Bengaluru campus of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney on the same day.


Patil further said UNSW Sydney, ranked among the world’s top 20 universities, will enable students from Karnataka to access world-class international education closer to home.

“UNSW Sydney will follow the same curriculum and teaching methodology as its Australian campus,” he said, adding that the Bengaluru campus is the sixth foreign university campus to be established in Karnataka.

The campus will initially offer undergraduate programmes in business, computer science, data science and decisions, along with a one-year postgraduate programme in cybersecurity. Each programme will have an intake capacity of 30 students.

Patil said universities including the University of Liverpool, Lancaster University, La Trobe University, Flinders University and Imperial College London have already established campuses in Karnataka. He added that the state’s research institutions, industrial base and innovation ecosystem make it an attractive destination for global universities.

The minister said more than 40 Australian companies already have a presence in Bengaluru, while Australian states such as Queensland and Victoria have established trade and investment offices in the city.
