Mirabai Chanu wins women's 48kg weightlifter title, opens India's gold medal account in CWG 2026

India's star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won women's 48kg title on Sunday, bagging the maiden gold medal for the country in Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026.The victory marked Chanu's third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold, having also topped the podium in the 2018 and 2022 editions. The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist had earlier won silver at the 2014 Games.Chanu also rewrote the record books, setting new Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records in the snatch with a best lift of 85kg before lifting a Games record 105kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 190kg.She earlier opened with a failed attempt at 82kg before successfully clearing the weight on her second lift. Chanu then lifted 85kg on her final attempt to establish the new snatch record. The gold medal adds to Chanu's remarkable Commonwealth Games record, having previously won titles at the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham Games.
