Virat Kohli reaches 15,000 ODI runs, joins Sachin Tendulkar in elite club

Virat Kohli on Sunday became only the second batter in the history of One-Day International cricket to cross 15,000 runs, joining legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar in the elite club.

Kohli reached the landmark during India’s chase of 296 against the West Indies in the opening ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.

He brought up the milestone in style, pulling a delivery from Alzarri Joseph towards midwicket for a four. Kohli then raised both arms to acknowledge the crowd as the stadium erupted in celebration.


The India batter has held the No. 2 spot on the ODI run-scoring charts since October 2025, when he overtook former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara. Sangakkara finished his 50-over career with 14,243 runs and is third on the all-time list.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is fourth with 13,704 runs from 375 ODIs, while Sri Lanka opener Sanath Jayasuriya occupies fifth place with 13,430 runs in 448 matches.

Kohli added another milestone to his tally during Sunday’s innings, bringing up his 80th ODI half-century in just 40 balls.

He also remains the format’s leading century-maker, with 54 ODI hundreds to his name. His 50th century came against New Zealand in the semifinal of the 2023 ODI World Cup in Mumbai.
