Shubman Gill regains No. 1 spot in ODI batting rankings

On Wednesday, Shubman Gill, the captain of the Indian cricket team, regained the status of number one player in the ICC rankings for the ODI format.

Young batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made a remarkable jump of 230 places in the ICC rankings for T20 cricket after his impressive performance against Zimbabwe, and he is now placed at number 48 in the world.

Gill took the place of Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand in the number one position in the ICC rankings for the ODI format. Mitchell has been at the top position since January 2023.

The ICC said, “There was some change at the top of the latest ODI rankings following the completion of the recent series between the West Indies and New Zealand as the absence of Black Caps' right-hander Daryl Mitchell saw Shubman Gill move back to become the No.1 ranked batter in 50-over cricket.”

It added, “Mitchell had held the top billing since January this year.”

Sooryavanshi has shown his potential talent in the recently-concluded India tour of Zimbabwe in three T20I matches as he scored two half-centuries from 151 runs at an average of 50.33 in his team’s 3-0 victory.

This 15-year-old player has reached the 48th position in the T20I rankings after jumping 230 points up the ladder.

Ishan Kishan is leading the T20I rankings with 910 rating points. He is holding the all-time third position in terms of his highest ratings after Abhishekh Sharma and Dawid Malan when he reached 916 points at the conclusion of the second T20I against Zimbabwe.

The ICC said, “Sooryavanshi's rating of 536 points is well adrift of his more experienced teammates, but Kishan can now boast of having a better career batter rating than more accomplished Indian players like Suryakumar Yadav (912) and Virat Kohli (909).”

Tilak Varma advanced two spots to occupy sixth place while T20I captain Shreyas Iyer moved up seven slots to take the 24th spot.

A new entry on the list is Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi who made a huge jump by 31 positions to 41st place in the T20I rankings for bowlers but Varun Chakravarthy, injured and missing the trip to Zimbabwe, dropped three spots, staying in the top 10.

Zimbabwean Ryan Burl climbed six spots to be in the 85th rank among the batters while Blessing Muzarabani progressed by 10 spots to rank 26th among the bowlers.

West Indies bowler Justin Greaves made news for his outstanding performance in the first Test against Pakistan. Greaves took five consecutive wicket-maidens in Tarouba when West Indies saw off Pakistan by 90 runs to take an unassailable 1-0 lead.

Greaves advanced 21 ranks to the 48th spot as a Test bowler and to ninth place among all-rounders.

Jayden Seales climbed to the 24th position, while fellow Pakistani bowler Mohammad Abbas claimed the 17th spot by also achieving a five-wicket haul.

Babar Azam reached the 15th position following an unbeaten half-century in his second innings.
