Ajinkya Rahane retirement: BCCI pays rich tributes as an illustrious career comes to a close

As long-time India player Ajinkya Rahane brought the curtains down on his illustrious career, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) paid rich tribues to his contribution to Indian cricket, particularly his role in some of the team's biggest overseas successes.

Rahane's retirement marks the end of a career in which he established himself as a key pillar of India's Test batting unit during a period when the team emerged as a dominant force across the world.

The BCCI described Rahane as one of India's most dependable performers during an international career that spanned nearly 15 years. In its message, BCCI credited him with playing several defining innings in difficult overseas conditions and leading the side through one of its most memorable Test triumphs during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.


Widely regarded for his compact technique and composed temperament, the Mumbai batter often produced his best performances on challenging foreign pitches.

Among his standout achievements were Test centuries at Lord's, Melbourne, Wellington, Kingston and Durban, innings that came in high-pressure situations and helped shape India's reputation as a competitive travelling side.

His ability to absorb difficult conditions and deliver when the team needed stability made him a regular fixture in India's middle order for much of the previous decade.

Rahane's defining moment came during India's historic tour of Australia in 2020-21.

He assumed the captaincy after India's crushing defeat in the Adelaide Test, where the visitors were dismissed for 36 in their second innings. With regular captain Virat Kohli returning home on paternity leave and multiple frontline players unavailable because of injuries during the COVID-19 pandemic, India entered the remainder of the series with expectations firmly against them.

Rahane responded with a century in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, helping India level the series before steering an injury-hit squad through the remaining matches.

India eventually secured a remarkable series victory after breaching Australia's long-standing unbeaten record at The Gabba in Brisbane, a result widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in Indian Test cricket.

Rahane captained India in six Test matches during his international career, remaining unbeaten as skipper with four victories and two drawn games. His calm decision-making and understated leadership style earned praise from teammates and observers alike during one of the most challenging overseas campaigns undertaken by an Indian side.

Across formats, Rahane accumulated more than 8,000 international runs and built a reputation as a cricketer who consistently prioritised the team's needs over personal milestones.

Beyond his batting, he was viewed as a senior figure in the dressing room, known for his professionalism, discipline and willingness to mentor younger players.

Paying tribute to Rahane, BCCI president Mithun Manhas said his career reflected selfless commitment to the team and highlighted his success in some of the toughest conditions in world cricket.

Manhas said Rahane's captaincy during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy would remain one of the defining chapters in Indian cricket, noting that he guided a young side through extraordinary circumstances to a famous series triumph in Australia.

BCCI honorary secretary Devajit Saikia also acknowledged Rahane's impact, saying the batter represented the game with sincerity and integrity throughout his career.

Saikia said Rahane's influence extended well beyond the runs he scored, pointing to his leadership, crucial contributions in pressure situations and the example he set for younger teammates.
