SC allows TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee to travel abroad for three weeks for eye treatment

The Supreme Court on Monday allowed Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee to travel abroad for three weeks for eye treatment, setting aside an immediate hurdle that had prevented the Diamond Harbour MP from seeking treatment overseas.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana passed the order while hearing Banerjee’s plea challenging a Calcutta High Court order that had denied him permission to travel abroad for medical treatment.

The Calcutta High Court had on August 5 rejected Banerjee’s request, noting that he had been unwilling to appear before a medical board at the state-run SSKM Hospital the following day for an assessment of his medical condition.

The High Court had said that had Banerjee appeared before the medical board, its assessment could have helped the court determine, based on the opinion of medical experts, whether he needed to travel abroad for treatment.

Banerjee had approached the Supreme Court against the High Court order. The apex court had on August 3 asked the High Court to take up within a week Banerjee’s plea seeking permission to travel abroad. The latest order now permits the TMC leader to leave the country for three weeks for his eye treatment.
