PM Modi chairs Union cabinet meeting at Parliament
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met at Parliament on Friday as both Houses remained paralysed by persistent Opposition protests over the alleged NEET paper leak and demands for Union Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation.

In the Lok Sabha, proceedings resumed at 12 noon but were repeatedly disrupted by slogan-shouting from Opposition members. Amid the din, the House passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to amend the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.

Defending the passage of the legislation, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Bill had been scheduled for discussion with the agreement of all parties in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC).

"Today an important bill was passed, and we indeed wanted everyone to participate in it. Time for this was fixed in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC)," Rijiju said.

Addressing Opposition members, he added, "You people should not go outside and say why was the bill passed without discussion?"

Following the passage of the Bill and continued disruptions, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day and will reconvene at 11 am on August 3.

The Rajya Sabha also witnessed repeated interruptions over multiple issues, including the alleged police action against students during the July 20 protests over the NEET controversy. Amid the uproar, the Upper House too was adjourned for the day and is scheduled to meet again at 11 am on Monday.
