Opposition links further House action to Amit Shah's stand on cops

NEW DELHI: The opposition took part in the discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, after having protested in the House for more than a week, but decided to link its continued constructive participation in the session to home minister Amit Shah's "satisfactory" response during the debate to the concerns regarding police excesses in the recent student agitation at Jantar Mantar.

The INDIA bloc decided at a meeting of its parliamentary floor leaders ahead of the discussion on the bill to resume its protest after the passage of the legislation if the home minister does not satisfactorily fix accountability for the police excesses, said people familiar with the matter. They said it was decided at the meeting that the police action and the home minister's accountability would be the key themes of opposition speakers, including the leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi, during the two-day debate.

Therefore, there is no unconditional commitment from the opposition to cooperate and enable the rest of the government's legislative business meant for the monsoon session, especially the pending Constitutional Amendment Bill on women's reservation and delimitation, according to the people

To demonstrate that the House stand-off had temporarily ended for enabling one bill, the opposition also decided to carry on with protest in the Rajya Sabha, which had a different set of legislative business listed for Tuesday, besides forcing yet another adjournment in the first half of the Lok Sabha before the examination bill was taken up.
