A parliamentary committee examining the proposed One Nation One Election framework has been granted more time to submit its report, with the Lok Sabha on Wednesday extending the deadline until the end of the Winter Session.

The 41-member Joint Committee of Parliament, which is scrutinising the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, will now submit its report by the first day of the last week of the Winter Session after the House approved the extension through a voice vote.

Committee chairman P P Chaudhary moved the resolution seeking additional time, citing the ongoing examination of the proposed constitutional changes aimed at enabling simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.

The Winter Session of Parliament is typically held from the last week of November until just before Christmas.

The panel has been holding consultations across the country on the proposed rollout of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies and local bodies by 2029. The exercise forms part of the government's push to implement the One Nation One Election framework.
