Narendra Modi government cannot be relied upon on black money issue: CPI(M)

NEW DELHI: CPI(M) today said the Narendra Modi government cannot be relied upon for bringing back black money as it was behaving exactly like the Manmohan Singh dispensation of making "hollow" poll promises.

"The Supreme Court's intervention is welcome. It was after the apex court's intervention that the SIT and probe was set up. The Modi government is behaving exactly like the Manmohan Singh government. BJP's stand on this issue during the election campaign has proved to be a hollow rhetoric," CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told reporters here.

"We cannot rely upon this government on delivering its promise of bringing back black money," he said, adding that Modi's poll promises to unearth black money and take firm action against such account holders abroad have come under "serious question".

He accused the government of being "unwilling" to come out with the information which it has received from foreign countries about Indians holding bank accounts abroad.

"It is pertinent to note that the Court has expressed doubts about the government's sincerity and resolve in the matter," Karat said.

His comments came on a day the government placed a list of names of 627 Indian account holders in HSBC bank, Geneva in black money case after the apex court had directed it to do so.
