Many in Trinamool Congress raise questions on Mamata Banerjee questioning CBI for arresting Madan Mitra

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress on Monday held a rally in Kolkata and its MPs protested in Parliament against BJP’s ‘political vendetta’ against the Mamata Banerjee government and her minister Madan Mitra, but a section of the party is not sure that these will benefit the party.

Banerjee spent most of her time at the state administrative headquarters at Nabanna when the rally was held. She also held a meeting with her party leaders and did not take part in the rally. But Trinamool insiders say many in the party have raised questions on the CM questioning a central agency for arresting a minister accused in a financial scam.

Party activists have blocked trains across the state to protest Mitra’s arrest.

Banerjee is yet to issue any whip to party workers though senior Trinamool leader Partha Chatterjee said, “our leader (Mamata) is very disturbed to know that party workers are organising blockades. She asked our workers to hold protest without disturbing public life.” He has sent message to all district units, asking workers not to block train movement and hold road blockades from Tuesday.

Trinamool activists also had shouted slogans inside a city court on Saturday where Mitra was produced after his arrest. Party leaders are also aware about CBI’s plan to shift Mitra’s case to some other court outside the state in case party activists continue to disturb court proceedings.

A section of party leaders feel that such measures would go against it and Banerjee. Already opposition parties have raised questions on why Trinamool was disturbing public life by holding rallies to protect one of its leaders arrested for alleged involvement in a major financial scam. A number of senior Trinamool leaders admitted in private that the attempt to protect a minister in CBI custody has sent a wrong message to the people.
