Lok Sabha okays Birth and Death Registration Bill without debate

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026 on Friday without discussion and the government's reply amid opposition protests.

The unabated protests demanding home minister Amit Shah speak in the House on the police action against students and also over the issue of the Ram temple donation theft caused an adjournment right at the start of the day's proceedings. When the House reassembled at noon, the chair adjourned the proceedings till Monday soon after the bill was rushed through the protests.

Some opposition MPs staged a mock show of the Ram temple donation theft in front of the Parliament House, with independent MP Pappu Yadav, dressed in saffron robes as a saint, acting as stealing from a donation box while some others, including Rahul Gandhi and Dimple Yadav, acted as putting donations in the box.

In the Lok Sabha, Dilip Saikia, who was in the chair, allowed the minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai to rush the bill, proposing requirement of judicial orders for registration of births and deaths after a delay of one year, through a voice vote amid opposition sloganeering. Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju blamed the opposition MPs for not joining the debate.

Later Rahul Gandhi accused the government of threatening the students who had participated in the recent agitation against exam paper leaks. "PM Modi and Amit Shah, you cannot threaten Gen Z into silence. First you broke their bones. Now you are filing FIRs (first information reports) and taking down their accounts. You are India's past. Be careful about how you treat India's future," he said in a post on X.

Targeting the BJP and RSS over the Ram temple donation theft, Dharmendra Yadav told journalists, "This looting has been going on since the trust for the construction of Lord Shri Ram's temple was formed in 2020."
