Govt-CEC plot to deny Gen Z voting rights, alleges Congress

New Delhi: Congress on Thursday cited the ET report, about how Gen Z voting rights are on hold due to the stalled special summary revision since January 2024, to allege that the Modi government was afraid of Gen Z and therefore it conspired with CEC Gyanesh Kumar to deny them their voting rights.

The official Congress X account, while sharing the report, said: "The Modi government fears Gen Z because it stands against Modi. In this panic, Modi has conspired with Gyanesh Kumar. Now, Gyanesh Kumar is engaged in snatching away Gen Z's voting rights. The Election Commission conducts a special summary revision (SSR) every year so that newly turned 18-year-old youth can be added to the voter list. But...Gyanesh Kumar has imposed a ban on SSR starting from 2024. That means the process of adding 18-year-old youth to the voter list has come to a standstill. While both election commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi are demanding that SSR be started, Gyanesh Kumar is not allowing it to happen... It's clear Gyanesh and Modi have caused great damage to the country's democracy. But remember, Gen Z is noting your crimes, it will teach you a lesson."

Later, when Rahul Gandhi was asked during the press conference about the problems Gen Z faces while trying to register on the voters' list due to SIR, he said that "they (BJP leaders) are aware" that Gen Z is raising voice against them and "won't vote for them", but "another dangerous thing is that ECI has lost control on the voters' list". Meanwhile, Congress has announced protest outside EC offices in state capitals on Friday.
