New Delhi: The government on Monday said it was ready for a discussion on student protests in the Lok Sabha, with parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju urging the Opposition to remain present in the House during the reply by the government.

When the House reassembled at 2 pm after multiple adjournments, Rijiju said Congress and leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi had been demanding a debate since the start of the session. "The government is ready for a discussion on all issues related to student protests. The Union home minister is prepared to give a detailed reply, but the Opposition should not walk out... We have made our offer. Now, there appear to be some differences between Congress and Samajwadi Party... As for the student issue, we are ready for a discussion. We have stated our position. Now, it is up to the Samajwadi Party and the Congress to sort out the differences between them," he said.

Rijiju reiterated the same position at the Business Advisory Committee meeting, stressing that the Opposition must allow a "threadbare discussion" without disruptions and listen to Shah's response.

Despite the assurance, the Lok Sabha remained paralysed by sloganeering over police action against protesting students at Jantar Mantar and alleged donation irregularities at the Ayodhya Ram temple trust.

Amid the din, minister of state for home Nityanand Rai introduced the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, to rename the state as 'Keralam', even as Congress MPs from the state joined the protests.
