Woman reveals alleged damage to fully furnished house after tenants moved out

A woman has expressed disappointment after finding her newly purchased, fully furnished house allegedly in a damaged and poorly maintained condition after being rented out. In an Instagram video, Dr Kshiti Soni documented the condition of various appliances, furniture items and parts of the property, which she claimed had been damaged within a year of the house being rented.

Soni shared a walkthrough of the property, highlighting the condition of the washing machine, refrigerator, sofa, drawers, ceiling and balcony. She questioned how the house had been treated despite being handed over with new furnishings and appliances.

Soni points out damaged appliances and furniture

Soni said the property had been given to tenants as a brand-new, fully furnished house. She specifically pointed to the washing machine, saying its mesh or cover for the spin tub had been left on the floor and that the appliance had been poorly maintained.

She also showed the refrigerator, claiming that it had been damaged despite being a new Godrej appliance. "You know, this house... I am making this video because I, we had given a brand-new house on rent. Everything was given fully furnished. The washing machine was also new. Now look at the condition of the washing machine, how badly it's been kept. Over there, the mesh/cover for its spin tub is lying on the floor. Look at the fridge; they broke the fridge too. It was all brand-new, our Godrej fridge. We had given it," she said.

According to Soni, the house had been furnished with the possibility that her family could eventually live there. She said the sofa had also been damaged, while the drawers were stuck open and could no longer be pushed back in.

Landlord questions condition of property

Soni further claimed that items were scattered around the house and that ceiling sheets had been damaged. She said the geyser and other installations had been completely new when the property was rented out.

"We had given it fully furnished thinking that if we have to live here in the future, we could stay. We gave a sofa and all; they ruined the sofa too. All these drawers don’t go back inside anymore; they're stuck open. Stuff is lying around everywhere. They damaged the ceiling sheets above. The geyser and everything was installed completely brand-new. Look at the state of the balcony. What have they done to my house? It has been kept so dirty," she added.

Soni said she was particularly surprised because she had rented the property to women, whom she had expected to take care of the house. "And you know, surprisingly, I rented this house out to girls... Look, when you pay rent, that doesn't mean you can treat the house just any way, right?" she said.

She also addressed potential comments about landlords receiving rent for allowing tenants to use their properties. "Many people will comment right now saying, 'Well, you were receiving rent,' but just because you're getting rent doesn't mean you treat it like 'use and throw' and just walk away," she said.

Soni added that the property had been registered only the previous year and said, "Now look at what condition my house has been reduced to."

Social media users react

The Instagram post prompted reactions from social media users, with several commenters saying that paying rent does not give tenants the right to damage a property.

One user wrote, "Paying rent doesn’t mean you can damage someone’s property." Another user posted the same comment. A third said, "Tenants should treat a rented home with basic respect." Another commenter linked the situation to security deposits, writing, "This is why landlords ask for huge security deposits."
