The cache of seven rock crystal tools, discovered in 1924 at the Abri des Merveilles cave in France's Dordogne region, provided early evidence that Neanderthals were capable of innovation and appreciated the aesthetic qualities of the materials they used.

Rare discovery at French cave
The transparent, yellow-tinged quartz scraper was excavated by a team from the American School of Prehistoric Research, now part of Harvard University, led by archaeologist George MacCurdy. The tool is currently housed in France's National Archaeological Museum.Neanderthals generally crafted tools from flint or chert because those materials fractured into sharp edges more predictably. However, only a limited number of Neanderthal sites across Europe have yielded tools made from microcrystalline quartz, also known as rock crystal, making the discovery particularly significant.
Tools likely crafted at the site
According to MacCurdy's excavation report published in April 1931, the transparent scraper was the first rock crystal tool recovered during the excavation and may have served as both a scraper and a point.The team also uncovered six additional rock crystal tools along with small crystal flakes, indicating the implements were likely fashioned inside the cave. The crystal is believed to have originated from the headwaters of the Vézère River, a tributary of the Dordogne that flows near the site.
Although Abri des Merveilles has not been precisely dated, archaeological evidence including stratigraphy, tool types and the discovery of a Neanderthal molar suggests the tools were produced between 45,000 and 80,000 years ago.
Discovery challenged prevailing scientific beliefs
MacCurdy concluded that Neanderthals, rather than modern humans, were the first to create sophisticated tools from rock crystal. His findings challenged the prevailing scientific view that portrayed Neanderthals as primitive and unintelligent.That perception stemmed largely from paleoanthropologist Marcellin Boule's 1909 analysis of a Neanderthal skeleton discovered at La Chapelle-aux-Saints in France. Boule's study of an elderly individual affected by osteoarthritis led to the widely accepted but incorrect depiction of Neanderthals as ape-like cavemen.
This view persisted for decades until paleogenetic research in the 21st century established that Neanderthals and modern humans interbred.

Evidence of appreciation for beauty
MacCurdy argued that the use of rock crystal suggested Neanderthals possessed an appreciation for beauty, even though no evidence of their rock art, engravings, carved objects or use of pigments had yet been discovered at the time.Writing in the journal PNAS in November 1931, he stated that while Neanderthals were not artists in the strict sense, their selective use of rock crystal demonstrated an eye for the beauty and quality of the material.
According to France's National Archaeological Museum, which featured the scraper as its Object of the Month in September 2025, MacCurdy's interpretation of the tools was highly innovative and contributed to the modern understanding of Neanderthals as skilled and capable toolmakers.
