Who is Subhadeep Ghosh? Meet Team India's new fielding coach

Subhadeep Ghosh has spent decades in the background of Indian cricket, first as a domestic player, then as a coach shaping some of the country's brightest young talents. Now, Subhadeep Ghosh is stepping into the spotlight, taking charge as the senior men's team's fielding coach ahead of the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka in August.

Who is Subhadeep Ghosh?

Subhadeep Ghosh was born in 1968 in Digboi, a small town in Assam better known for its oil refinery than its cricketing pedigree. Yet it was here that his cricketing journey began, eventually taking him into the domestic circuit as a middle-order right-handed batter who could also turn his arm over as an off-spinner.

He represented Assam and later Railways at the First-Class level, making his debut in both First-Class and List A cricket in the 1994-95 season. Across a career that wasn't headline-grabbing but was steady, Ghosh played 17 First-Class matches, scoring 316 runs, and featured in 17 List A games for 307 runs. His playing days wound down gradually, his last First-Class appearance came in 2004, followed by a final List A outing in 2005.

The Shift Into Coaching

Once his playing career ended, Ghosh didn't step away from the game, he simply changed roles. Over the following years, he built a name for himself within India's cricket development ecosystem, working quietly but consistently across various levels of the sport.

For roughly six to seven years, Ghosh has been attached to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, a period during which he worked closely with Rahul Dravid, who headed the academy before taking over as India's head coach. That association is believed to have given Ghosh valuable exposure to the standards and methods used at the top level of Indian cricket, long before his own promotion to the senior team.

Experience Across Every Level of the Game

What stands out about Ghosh's coaching journey is its breadth. He has worked with:

• The Indian women's team, serving as fielding coach during their 2021 tour of Australia.
• India A, where he has held fielding coach responsibilities on multiple occasions.
• The India Under-19 team, most notably during the 2024 Under-19 World Cup campaign in South Africa.

This mix of assignments, spanning age-group cricket, the women's team, and India A — meant Ghosh had already worked with a wide cross-section of Indian cricketers before ever stepping into a senior men's team role.

An IPL Résumé Too

Ghosh's coaching credentials extend into the IPL as well. He was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders' support staff back in 2014, the year the franchise clinched its second title. He later moved on to work as fielding coach with Delhi Capitals, further building his reputation within the franchise cricket circuit.

Despite this extensive background, Ghosh's appointment as India's senior team fielding coach marks new territory, his first assignment at this level will come during the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka in August. He takes over from T Dilip, whose contract was not renewed by the BCCI after concluding at the end of India's white-ball tour of England.

For a coach who has spent years working just below the international spotlight, it's a significant step, one that puts him in charge of an area of the game, fielding, that has increasingly become a differentiator at the highest level.
