WhatsApp introduces web browser calling: No app download required; Check other new features introduced

WhatsApp has begun rolling out audio and video calling on WhatsApp Web, allowing users to make and receive calls directly from a browser without downloading any application.

The feature, announced by the Meta-owned platform, works for both one-on-one and group calls and is available to anyone using WhatsApp through a web browser, whether on a shared computer, a work laptop that restricts app installations, or simply for those who prefer staying in their browser.

This is a significant shift for WhatsApp Web, which has long been the go-to option for users who prefer typing on a full keyboard but has historically pushed people back to their phones or the desktop app the moment a call came in.


WhatsApp Web calling: What you get in the browser

WhatsApp Web calling is not a stripped-down version of what you get on the app. Users will have access to screen sharing, call reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab that shows full call history and saved favourites, all without leaving the browser.

All calls made through WhatsApp Web are end-to-end encrypted, carry no time limits, and are free of charge, consistent with what the platform already offers on mobile and desktop.

WhatsApp said WhatsApp Web calling is particularly useful for college students on shared computers, professionals on corporate devices where app downloads are restricted, or anyone working from a browser who does not want to switch devices just to take a call.

WhatsApp call transfer: Move calls between devices without hanging up

Alongside WhatsApp Web calling, the platform is also introducing WhatsApp call transfer, which lets users move an active group call from one device to another without disconnecting.

So if you start a call on your phone while commuting and then get home, you can shift that same call over to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app to continue on a larger screen. The reverse works too, moving from desktop back to mobile when you need to step away.

This is a feature that video conferencing platforms like Zoom and Google Meet have offered for a while now, and WhatsApp bringing it in closes a gap that frequent callers on the platform have felt for some time.

WhatsApp waiting room: More control over group calls

For group calls, WhatsApp is adding a waiting room feature. When a call link is created with the "Require approval to join" option turned on, participants who click the link will enter the WhatsApp waiting room and only get admitted when the call host lets them in.

It is a straightforward but useful addition, particularly for work calls, online classes, or any group call where the host needs to control who is on the call and when they join.

WhatsApp QuickHD and noise suppression: Cleaner calls from the first second

WhatsApp is also addressing two of the more common frustrations with video calls, the blurry first few seconds of video and background noise bleeding into conversations.

WhatsApp QuickHD is designed to deliver high-definition video right from the start of a call, rather than beginning grainy and sharpening up after a few seconds, which has been the standard experience on most video calling platforms.

WhatsApp noise suppression, meanwhile, filters out background sound so the person on the other end hears your voice clearly, even if you are in a loud room, a busy office, or a cafe. The setting can be turned on or off at any point during a call from the in-call settings menu.

WhatsApp new features rollout: When will these be available

WhatsApp said all five features are rolling out gradually and will reach all users soon. The platform did not specify a fixed date for full global availability.

For anyone who has kept WhatsApp Web open in a browser tab as a secondary tool while relying on their phone for calls, that habit may now be one less reason to keep the phone within arm's reach.
