Weather update, August 10: IMD flags heavy rain alerts, but which states are most at risk?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a spell of widespread to fairly widespread rainfall over large parts of the country between 9th and 15th August, accompanied in several regions by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. According to the national weather agency's latest bulletin issued on the night of 9th August, hill states in the northwest, the northeastern region and pockets of central and peninsular India are likely to see the heaviest spells, with some areas expected to record very heavy rainfall over the coming days. Coastal belts along both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal face isolated thunderstorm activity, with wind speeds forecast to touch 60 kmph in certain pockets. The IMD has also flagged the possibility of waterlogging, minor structural damage and disruption to road and rail traffic in the worst affected areas, advising residents in vulnerable zones to stay alert through the week.

Delhi-NCR

Rain activity in the National Capital Region is expected to remain comparatively subdued through the week, with isolated to scattered showers forecast between 9th and 15th August. The IMD has, however, flagged the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall specifically on 9th August across Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and neighbouring Punjab, after which conditions are expected to stay largely within the isolated to scattered category for the remainder of the outlook period.

Maharashtra

Coastal Maharashtra, clubbed with Goa under the Konkan region in the IMD's classification, is set for fairly widespread to widespread rainfall through the entire forecast window from 9th to 15th August. Inland, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are expected to see comparatively lighter, isolated to scattered showers over the same period, with both regions likely to experience an isolated thunderstorm accompanied by lightning on 9th August.

Telangana

Telangana has been placed under the isolated to scattered rainfall category for the full week from 9th to 15th August, with the weather office not flagging any heavy rainfall, thunderstorm or high wind warning specific to the state during this period.

Karnataka

Karnataka's weather outlook varies by region. Coastal Karnataka is forecast to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall through 9th to 15th August, while North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka are expected to see lighter, isolated to scattered showers over the same stretch. On 9th August specifically, North Interior Karnataka faces the risk of a thunderstorm with gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph, while Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka may see gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph, along with isolated heavy rainfall. Strong surface winds have also been forecast across the state on 9th August.

Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, along with Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad, is expected to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall between 10th and 13th August, with isolated to scattered showers likely on 9th and 15th August. Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast for the region during 10th to 12th August. Himachal Pradesh, meanwhile, falls under the fairly widespread to widespread rainfall category for the entire week from 9th to 15th August, with isolated heavy rainfall expected on 9th August and again from 12th to 15th August, and isolated very heavy rainfall likely during 10th and 11th August.

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is also under the fairly widespread to widespread rainfall category through the full outlook period of 9th to 15th August. The state faces the risk of isolated thunderstorms and lightning through the same stretch, along with isolated heavy rainfall from 11th to 15th August and isolated very heavy rainfall on 9th and 10th August.

Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan

In Uttar Pradesh, the eastern districts are expected to see fairly widespread to widespread rainfall on 10th August, along with isolated heavy rainfall during 9th and 10th August. Western Uttar Pradesh falls largely in the isolated to scattered rainfall category, with isolated heavy rainfall forecast specifically for 10th August.

In Rajasthan, the eastern half of the state is set for fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from 9th to 13th August, with isolated heavy rainfall expected on 9th August and again from 12th to 13th August, and isolated very heavy rainfall likely during 10th and 11th August. Western Rajasthan, by contrast, remains in the isolated to scattered rainfall category through the week, with an isolated thunderstorm forecast on 9th and 10th August and isolated heavy rainfall expected from 11th to 12th August.

Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh

Western Madhya Pradesh is expected to see fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from 9th to 12th August, tapering to isolated to scattered showers between 13th and 15th August, with isolated heavy rainfall on 9th and 10th August and isolated very heavy rainfall from 11th to 12th August. Eastern Madhya Pradesh follows a similar pattern, with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from 9th to 11th August, isolated to scattered showers from 12th to 15th August, and isolated heavy rainfall on 9th and 10th August.

Vidarbha is forecast to remain in the isolated to scattered rainfall category for the full week, with an isolated thunderstorm expected on 10th August. Chhattisgarh alternates between fairly widespread to widespread rainfall on 9th, 10th and 12th to 15th August, and isolated to scattered rainfall on 11th August, with isolated thunderstorms likely from 9th to 12th August, isolated heavy rainfall from 10th to 14th August and isolated very heavy rainfall on 9th August.

Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Bihar is expected to see fairly widespread to widespread rainfall only in the latter half of the week, from 13th to 15th August, with isolated to scattered showers earlier from 9th to 12th August. Gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph are likely across the state through the full period, alongside isolated heavy rainfall on 9th August and again from 13th to 15th August.

Jharkhand and Odisha are both forecast to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall throughout the week, with gusty winds of similar intensity expected from 9th to 12th August in both regions. Jharkhand faces isolated heavy rainfall on 9th and 10th August, while Odisha's isolated heavy rainfall spells are expected on 9th August and again from 12th to 15th August.

Gangetic West Bengal and the sub-Himalayan belt of West Bengal and Sikkim are also under the fairly widespread to widespread rainfall category for the full week. Gangetic West Bengal faces gusty winds from 9th to 10th August and isolated heavy rainfall from 13th to 14th August, while the sub-Himalayan region is expected to see isolated heavy rainfall on 9th and 12th August.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are forecast to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall for the entire week, with the added risk of a thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, through the same period.

Northeast India

Arunachal Pradesh is expected to see isolated to scattered rainfall from 9th to 11th August, shifting to fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from 12th to 14th August. The state faces isolated thunderstorms on 11th and 12th August, along with isolated heavy rainfall from 11th to 15th August.

Assam and Meghalaya will see isolated to scattered rainfall on 10th and 11th August, with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall on 9th August and again from 12th to 15th August. Isolated thunderstorms are likely from 9th to 12th August, isolated heavy rainfall from 9th to 12th August, and isolated very heavy rainfall from 13th to 15th August.

Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are forecast to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall through the entire week, with isolated thunderstorms expected on 9th, 10th and 12th August, and isolated heavy rainfall on 9th August and again from 12th to 15th August.

Gujarat and Saurashtra & Kutch

The Gujarat region is expected to see isolated to scattered rainfall through the week, with an isolated thunderstorm likely from 9th to 10th August. Saurashtra and Kutch remain in the isolated to scattered rainfall category for the entire outlook period, with no thunderstorm or heavy rainfall specifically flagged.

Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep

Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are forecast to see isolated to scattered rainfall through the week, with the risk of a thunderstorm and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, from 9th to 12th August, along with strong surface winds over the same period. Rayalaseema faces an identical pattern of isolated to scattered rainfall, thunderstorm activity and strong surface winds through 9th to 12th August.

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to see isolated to scattered rainfall for the full week, with a thunderstorm, gusty winds and strong surface winds forecast for 9th and 10th August.

Kerala and Mahe, along with Lakshadweep, are both under the fairly widespread to widespread rainfall category for the entire week. Both regions face the risk of a thunderstorm with gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, isolated heavy rainfall and strong surface winds, all concentrated on 9th August.
