The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across large parts of the country from Tuesday, July 28, with heavy to very heavy showers expected in several states over the coming days. The weather office has warned that an active monsoon, fuelled by a deep depression and multiple cyclonic circulations, is likely to bring intense rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across north, central, east and west India.

The forecast comes as the deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal continues to influence weather conditions after crossing the West Bengal–north Odisha coast, strengthening monsoon activity over much of the country.

Why is heavy rainfall expected?

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon remains active due to several weather systems currently affecting the region.


The monsoon trough continues to lie south of its normal position, while the deep depression that developed over the northwest Bay of Bengal has moved inland after crossing the West Bengal and north Odisha coast. Additional upper-air cyclonic circulations over Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and the Arabian Sea are also expected to enhance rainfall activity across several regions during the week.

Heavy rain likely in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh

The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall over Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab between July 28 and July 31, with heavy rainfall expected in several places on July 28 and July 29.

Western Uttar Pradesh is likely to witness widespread rain from July 28 to August 2, while eastern Uttar Pradesh is expected to receive significant rainfall on July 28, followed by additional spells later in the week.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also likely in parts of the region.

Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir to receive heavy rainfall

The hill states are expected to remain under active monsoon conditions throughout the week.

According to the IMD, widespread rainfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir until August 2, with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast at isolated places.

The weather office has cautioned that prolonged rainfall could increase the risk of landslides, flash floods and disruption to transport in vulnerable hilly areas.

Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand remain under heavy rain watch

Eastern India is likely to continue receiving intense rainfall even after the deep depression moves inland.

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand on July 28, while Odisha is expected to remain under the influence of the weather system before rainfall gradually eases.

Thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are also expected across parts of eastern India.

Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh likely to witness intense monsoon activity

Heavy rainfall is expected to continue across Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during the week.

East Madhya Pradesh is likely to receive heavy rain on July 28, while Chhattisgarh is expected to experience persistent rainfall through the week, with isolated areas likely to record very heavy showers.

Maharashtra and Gujarat to receive more rainfall

The IMD has forecast continued monsoon activity over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Heavy rainfall is likely across parts of Gujarat on July 28 and July 29, while Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra are expected to witness persistent showers over the coming days.

Some districts could also experience very heavy rainfall, particularly in coastal regions.

Heavy showers likely across southern states

Rainfall activity is also expected to remain active across southern India.

Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Karnataka are likely to receive widespread rainfall over the next several days.

Heavy rainfall has been forecast for Kerala and Coastal Karnataka, while thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are expected in Telangana, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Thunderstorms and gusty winds expected in several states

Apart from heavy rainfall, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across many parts of the country.

Wind speeds of 40 to 60 kmph are likely in parts of eastern and southern India, while isolated areas may witness stronger gusts during thunderstorms.

Residents have been advised to remain indoors during lightning activity, avoid waterlogged roads and follow updates issued by local authorities.

Hot and humid conditions to persist in parts of Andhra Pradesh

While much of the country is expected to receive rain, the IMD has said hot and humid weather is likely to continue over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on July 28, despite ongoing monsoon activity elsewhere.

With heavy rainfall forecast across multiple states from Tuesday, July 28, the IMD has advised residents to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins and follow instructions issued by local administrations. People living in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas should remain vigilant as persistent rainfall may disrupt transport and daily life in several regions.
