Uber airport cab driver allegedly demands double the app fare, asks passenger to pay Rs 1,780 instead of Rs 885 and seek a refund later

A passenger has alleged that an Uber driver tried to charge nearly twice the fare displayed on the app after an airport pickup. According to a Reddit post, the passenger's app showed a fare of Rs 885, while the driver allegedly presented a screenshot claiming the trip cost Rs 1,780.

The passenger shared the experience in a Reddit post titled “Beware of this scam by Uber drivers from airport." The ride reportedly appeared normal at first, but the situation changed when the driver asked whether the passenger would pay in cash.

Driver Allegedly Shows Screenshot With Higher Fare

According to the passenger, the driver kept the ride active on his app after reaching the destination and showed a screenshot displaying the higher amount. The driver also reportedly mentioned that he could rate the passenger, leaving them uncertain about how the platform's rating system worked.

“He also showed me that he’s able to rate me. At that time I didn’t know if the rider rating is before ending the ride or after. He said that since the fare became so high, it would take time for the ride to end on my phone. Made some BS up like that," the passenger wrote.

The driver allegedly asked the passenger to pay Rs 1,780 first and then contact Uber to dispute the extra charge and request a refund. However, the passenger noticed that their app continued to display a fare of Rs 885 and showed that the ride was still active.

Passenger Contacts Uber Support To Verify Fare

Rather than paying the disputed amount, the passenger contacted Uber support through the app. According to the Reddit post, a support representative called back quickly, allowing the passenger to put the call on speaker so the driver could hear the conversation.

“My app was showing Rs 885, and the ride was still active. I called Uber support (there was an option on screen on top right and I’m so glad they immediately called back) and put the agent on speaker," they wrote.

The passenger said the support representative confirmed that the fare was Rs 885 and that the trip had not been ended. She reportedly asked the driver to close and reopen his app.

“She confirmed that, on her end, the fare was Rs 885 and the ride hadn’t been ended. She told him to close and reopen his app. He did so without arguing with her; he knew his scam won’t be working. He ended the ride two mins after driving away from my home."

Reddit Users Advise Passengers To Use Online Payments

The incident prompted discussion about payment methods and fare disputes during app-based cab rides. One user advised passengers to opt for digital payments to avoid similar situations.

“Please use online payment methods like card or wallet specifically to avoid issues like this." one user said.
