Techie claims he met delivery partner laid off from IT sector on the day he joined new job, says conversation ‘broke him’

A techie shared an account of meeting a delivery partner who was previously employed in the IT sector, saying the encounter changed the way he viewed his own recent job success. The Reddit user said he had received an offer from a good company after months of applications and interviews, only to hear the delivery partner’s story while celebrating the achievement.

According to the post, the delivery partner was a 2024 computer science graduate from a local college who had previously secured a job at Indian IT giant. He worked there for some time before being laid off a few months earlier this year. Since losing the job, he had been looking for another position in the IT department while taking up delivery work to support his family.

Delivery partner asks for job referral

The Reddit user said the delivery partner asked whether anyone at home worked in IT after arriving with a food delivery. When the user confirmed that he did, the delivery partner shared his employment history and asked whether he could be referred to a company or given guidance on finding another IT role.

The user said he agreed to pass along the man's profile if he came across a suitable opportunity. He added that he had not yet received the resume but intended to make an effort to help if it was sent to him.

User reflects on IT job market

The encounter came as the user was celebrating his own job offer. He said he had ordered a dessert after receiving the offer, following months of applications and interviews.

However, hearing about the delivery partner's circumstances took away much of his excitement. The user described the timing as ironic and said the conversation "broke" him.

He contrasted the delivery partner's situation with his own professional experience, saying he was already part of what he described as a good company and had five years of experience in backend development. He also said his income placed him in the top 2-3% of India, yet he had still struggled to receive callbacks from companies and had experienced periods of feeling down and demotivated during his own job search.

Post highlights concerns over entry-level IT jobs

The user said the interaction gave him a first-hand view of the difficulties some IT professionals face in the current job market. He particularly pointed to the challenges faced by entry-level candidates and those without prestigious educational backgrounds.

He wrote that finding an entry-level IT position was "so damn difficult", particularly for candidates he described as mediocre or those who did not come from prestigious backgrounds. He also expressed concern about the delivery partner's prospects of returning to the industry, saying he personally felt doing so was "next to impossible" under current market conditions.

At the same time, the user acknowledged his own relative financial stability and said the experience made him realise how fortunate people with stable incomes can be.

He ended the post by wishing the delivery partner success and expressing hope that he would find another opportunity in the industry. "I hope he makes it," the user wrote, adding that he would do his best to help if he received the man's resume.
