9,000 kmph: SpaceX junk is about to punch a hole in the Moon. Why scientists are happy

A piece of SpaceX rocket debris is set to crash into the Moon at nearly 9,000 kmph. Here's why scientists are interested in the impact and what it could reveal.

Nearly 9,000 kilometres per hour. That is how fast a dead piece of SpaceX rocket will hit the Moon on Wednesday, and the world’s planetary scientists have been busy for weeks preparing to watch, rather than dreading it. The object is the remains of a Falcon 9 upper stage, the part of a SpaceX rocket that does the final push to send a payload deep into space. This one did its job on January 15, 2025, releasing two robotic Moon landers, Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost and Japan’s ispace-built Resilience, before drifting away with nowhere to go. From then on nobody drove it anywhere.

Gravity and the pressure of sunlight did the rest and now, more than 18 months later, it is on a collision course with the lunar surface near a place called Einstein Crater. The impact is expected in the pre-dawn hours of August 5 US time, or around mid-day in India. That means nobody here will actually see it—the Moon just won’t be in the right position. That hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm of planetary scientists, who have been tracking the debris for months and are treating the crash as a rare, fully scripted experiment rather than an accident to fret over.


A crash scientists actually wanted to happen

Unlike a meteor strike, which arrives with zero warning, this collision has been mapped out almost to the minute. Bill Gray, the tracker who first spotted where the debris was headed, puts the impact speed at roughly 8,700 kilometres an hour, about seven times the speed of sound. That's fast enough to release energy equivalent to nearly three tonnes of TNT on contact.

"Things are getting crowded up there," Gray said, describing his plan to watch the aftermath unfold from New Brunswick, Canada. That crowding is exactly why nobody in his field is treating this as bad news. A predictable, well-tracked, near-9,000-kmph impact is the kind of controlled experiment researchers almost never get, since actual meteoroid strikes give no such warning.

At those speeds, don't expect fireworks visible from your backyard. Researchers say the flash itself will last well under a second and is too faint for the naked eye. What should be visible through telescopes, though, is the plume that follows: a spray of lunar dust and rock thrown several kilometres into the black sky above the surface.

That plume sticks around a lot longer on the Moon than it would here. Benjamin Fernando of the Los Alamos National Laboratory points out that with next to no gravity holding things down and zero atmosphere to disperse it, the debris cloud can hang visibly in place for several minutes rather than settling in seconds.

What's left behind

Fernando's team expects the crash to leave a crater somewhere around 27 metres across and 5 metres deep, too small to spot from Earth but well within range of orbiting cameras. Two spacecraft are positioned to catch it: NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea's Danuri, both tasked with photographing the site before and after. Danuri's flight path is especially close, passing within a few kilometres of the doomed rocket stage just two minutes ahead of impact.

Only one other accidental rocket crash on the Moon has ever been documented. A discarded Chinese rocket body struck the lunar far side back in 2022, an event scientists only pieced together after the fact rather than watched unfold in real time. This one is different for a simple reason: it's happening on the Moon's near side, in daylight, with the world's space agencies already watching.

The debris problem nobody's solving fast enough

The rocket stage's uncontrolled drift wasn't inevitable. Experts note it could easily have been redirected into a stable orbit around the Sun once its job was done, a routine disposal manoeuvre that simply didn't happen here. It's a detail that matters more with every passing year, as India, the US, China and private players all push deeper into lunar territory. NASA's Artemis programme, China's own crewed lunar ambitions, and the ongoing race between SpaceX and Blue Origin to build Moon landers all add more hardware to an already busy stretch of space.

Retired astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell put the stakes plainly: a stray rocket stage crashing into empty lunar terrain is a non-event today, but once there are permanent human outposts on the Moon, that same kind of uncontrolled leftover hardware stops being harmless.

For India, still riding the momentum of Chandrayaan-3 and building toward Gaganyaan and its own lunar ambitions, Wednesday's impact is a preview of a problem the country will have to reckon with too: every successful mission leaves something behind, and space is running out of room to ignore it.
