Sawan Shivratri and rain traffic alert: Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad roads likely to face heavy congestion; check routes to avoid

Delhi-NCR commuters are likely to face traffic congestion on Tuesday, August 11, as the Kanwar Yatra enters its final day ahead of Sawan Shivratri. Large groups of Kanwariyas travelling on foot and motorcycles, temporary Kanwar camps and increased pedestrian movement have affected traffic on several roads across Delhi and neighbouring areas.

Rain has added to the traffic problems, with waterlogged stretches and slow-moving traffic reported in parts of Delhi and the Delhi-Ghaziabad corridor.

Commuters travelling towards Noida, Ghaziabad, Greater Kailash, Nehru Place and other busy areas should check traffic conditions before starting their journey.

Delhi Traffic Today: Kanwar Yatra Causes Congestion

Several parts of Delhi witnessed slow traffic as Kanwariyas carrying decorated Kanwars moved towards their destinations. The Kanwars are traditionally decorated bamboo poles with containers carrying Ganga water.

Traffic queues were reported on Radhakrishnan Marg and Abai Marg, while movement was also slow on the stretch between LSR College and Nehru Place. Traffic near the Savitri flyover towards Chirag Delhi was also affected.

The movement of pilgrims, along with roadside Kanwar camps and increased activity in markets, has put additional pressure on several roads.

Rohini Traffic Affected By Kanwar Camp

In Rohini, a Kanwar camp near Shri Shiv Hanuman Mandir in Sector 2 contributed to congestion. Groups of devotees were seen resting at temporary shelters set up along the route.

Several Kanwariyas were also travelling in groups on motorcycles or walking together while carrying their Kanwars. The combination of pilgrim movement, pedestrian activity and vehicles has slowed traffic in some stretches.

Greater Kailash And Uttam Nagar Traffic Update

Traffic movement in Greater Kailash was affected near the Archana Complex red light because of ongoing road-divider construction.

At the Main Uttam Nagar red light, commuters reported another problem, with e-rickshaws, roadside vendors and flower shops occupying parts of the road. The reduced carriageway has made movement difficult and could also create problems for emergency vehicles.

Commuters travelling through these areas should allow additional time and consider alternative routes wherever possible.

Delhi-Ghaziabad Traffic Slow Amid Rain

Traffic movement on the Delhi-Ghaziabad side was also affected, particularly near the Delhi-Meerut Expressway around Patparganj. Rain during the day further slowed vehicles on several stretches.

A video shared by commuters reportedly showed a car travelling on the wrong side of the road, highlighting the additional road-safety risks that can arise during heavy congestion and rain.

Motorists should avoid taking risky shortcuts or driving against traffic, even when roads are heavily congested.

Kalindi Kunj Traffic Advisory

The Delhi Traffic Police had earlier warned commuters about congestion around Kalindi Kunj junction, Okhla Barrage Road and the Noida-Kalindi Kunj road due to Kanwariya movement.

Traffic around Kalindi Kunj is expected to remain affected until August 12 because of the movement of pilgrims as well as road repair work on the Okhla Barrage-Kalindi Kunj stretch.

Commuters travelling between Delhi and Noida should therefore check the latest traffic advisory before using this route.

GT Road Closed On August 11 And 12

One of the key traffic restrictions concerns GT Road between Apsara Border and Yamuna Bridge.

The stretch will remain closed to general traffic on August 11 and 12 due to arrangements related to the Kanwar Yatra. Commuters have been advised to use alternative routes, including NH-9 and NH-44.

Those travelling between Delhi and Ghaziabad should plan their journeys accordingly to avoid getting stuck near the restricted stretch.

Noida Traffic Alert For Commuters

Traffic movement between Noida and Delhi may also be affected, particularly around Kalindi Kunj and the Okhla Barrage corridor.

With large groups of Kanwariyas moving towards their destinations and roadwork continuing on parts of the route, commuters should avoid unnecessary travel through the affected stretches during peak hours.

People travelling towards South Delhi from Noida may consider alternative corridors depending on their destination and real-time traffic conditions.

Ghaziabad Traffic Alert Today

Ghaziabad commuters should be particularly cautious while travelling towards Delhi, as restrictions on GT Road between Apsara Border and Yamuna Bridge are expected to affect normal traffic movement.

NH-9 and NH-44 have been suggested as alternative routes for general traffic. However, motorists should check live traffic conditions before setting out, as rain and increased vehicle movement could lead to further delays.

Rain Adds To Delhi Traffic Problems

Monsoon rain has added another layer to the traffic situation in the capital. On Monday, Mayur Vihar recorded the highest rainfall among the cited Delhi stations at 37 mm, followed by Mungeshpur at 21 mm, Pusa at 4 mm and Narayana at 3 mm till 4.15 pm.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall in Delhi through August 16, with heavy to very heavy rainfall possible at isolated places.

Rainfall during the Kanwar Yatra can make roads slower and increase the risk of waterlogging, particularly on already congested stretches.

Motorists should follow traffic police instructions, avoid stopping unnecessarily on busy roads and leave early if their journey is unavoidable.

When will Kanwar Yatra end?

The Kanwar Yatra began on July 30 and is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, August 11, on the occasion of Sawan Shivratri.

As the pilgrimage reaches its final stage, movement of Kanwariyas is expected to remain high on several roads in Delhi-NCR. Traffic restrictions and diversions may therefore continue around important pilgrimage routes.
