Who was Anne Frank?
Anne Frank was born as Annelies Marie Frank on 12 June 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany, to a Jewish family.After Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power, her family moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands in 1934 in search of safety. However, Germany occupied the Netherlands in 1940, and anti-Jewish persecution intensified.
In July 1942, Anne, her family and several others went into hiding in a concealed section of her father's office building in Amsterdam, later known as the Secret Annex. During the more than two years they spent there, Anne recorded her thoughts, dreams and daily experiences in her diary.
On 4 August 1944, the group was discovered and arrested by the Gestapo. Anne and her sister, Margot, were eventually transferred from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they died of illness, believed to be typhus, in early 1945, just weeks before the camp was liberated.
Anne's father, Otto Frank, the family's only survivor, returned to Amsterdam after the war. He discovered that Anne's diary had been preserved by Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl. Fulfilling his daughter's dream of becoming a writer, he published her diary in 1947.
