Starting in January 2028, all newly released PlayStation games will be available only in digital format through the PlayStation Store and retail partners. The company clarified that the move will not affect games released before the deadline, which will continue to be sold on physical discs.
The announcement sparked backlash from players concerned about game ownership, preservation, and the future of physical media. However, during Sony's earnings call on July 31, the company made it clear that it will proceed with the transition.
"There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that the digitalization of content overall has been progressing," Sony Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao said through an interpreter during the Q&A session. "It's not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content. Digitalization is progressing."
Tao said Sony carefully evaluated the decision before moving ahead. "When we think about the future, we put in a lot of thought and time. We cautiously considered this and came to this conclusion, and we're going to cautiously move this forward," he said.
Acknowledging the criticism, Tao said Sony understands why many gamers remain attached to physical games. "We have received various opinions, and people have strong views. We understand that the community has shared those views with us," he said. "Games are loved by many people. They're connected to people's fond memories in many cases, and we understand those emotions. In the future digital ecosystem, how we engage gamers is something we would like to continue to explore."
Addressing concerns about retail partners, Tao said Sony is working closely with regional retailers to ensure a mutually beneficial transition. "About the retailers, there are regional characteristics, and for each regional partner, we try to have a thorough dialogue so that we can end up in a win-win situation," he said.
Tao also dismissed the idea that removing physical discs would weaken PlayStation's position against PC gaming. "We don't feel that the disc is the factor to differentiate PlayStation from the PC," he said. "The curated content is one of our strengths, and the game environment being stable is another. Compared to high-end gaming PCs, our product is more affordable. So we don't feel that the disc itself is a strong factor for differentiation. Going forward, we can coexist peacefully with PC games."
Earlier, Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer habits. "This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today. We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support," it said in a blog post.
