Mumbai weather today: Rain returns after brief break, IMD issues red, orange and yellow alerts across Maharashtra

Mumbai and nearby areas are expected to witness a fresh spell of rainfall from Thursday, July 30, after a brief break in monsoon activity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall and gusty winds in isolated areas. Several other parts of Maharashtra are also under weather alerts due to the revival of monsoon conditions.

Mumbai, Thane under yellow alert

The IMD has upgraded the weather warning for Mumbai to yellow, predicting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph at isolated places.

Thane is also expected to experience similar conditions, with thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for Thursday.

Palghar to see orange alert on Friday

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Palghar district on Friday, July 31. The warning includes heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 50 to 60 kmph at isolated places.

Maharashtra district-wise IMD alert status

The IMD has issued a red alert for Jalgaon, warning of heavy rainfall conditions.

An orange alert has been issued for Raigad, the ghat areas of Pune, Kolhapur and Satara, along with Nashik, Dhule, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Amravati, Wardha, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli for extremely heavy rainfall.

A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Nandurbar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Satara, Pune, Beed, Parbhani, Latur, Nanded, Hingoli, Buldhana, Akola, Washim and Yavatmal, with heavy rain expected in these districts.

Deep depression system triggers monsoon revival

Meteorologists have linked the renewed monsoon activity to a deep depression system over Odisha, which has strengthened rainfall patterns across the region.

According to IMD data, between Tuesday, July 28, and Wednesday morning, July 29, Mumbai's Colaba coastal observatory recorded 4.8 mm rainfall, while the Santacruz station received 0.1 mm. Earlier, the eastern suburbs recorded average rainfall of 8 mm, followed by around 3 mm rainfall across the western suburbs and island city areas.

Mumbai rainfall remained above normal in July

The recent slowdown in rainfall was attributed to the absence of active monsoon systems after Mumbai received above-normal rainfall throughout July.

So far, Mumbai's suburbs have recorded 1,490 mm rainfall in July, which is higher than the city's actual monthly rainfall quota for the month.
