Meet Seema Kaliramna, a mother and PhD scholar, who battled four fouls to win bronze medal in Commonwealth Games 2026

Indian discus thrower Seema Kaliramna secured a bronze medal in the women's discus throw event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. She finished third with a best effort of 58.65m.

Seema managed only two valid throws out of six attempts. After opening her series with a foul, she recorded a throw of 57.32m before producing her medal-winning effort of 58.65m. She ended the competition with three consecutive fouls, but her best throw was enough to secure a podium finish.

Jamaica's Samantha Hall won the gold medal with a Games-leading throw of 61.66m, while Canada's Julia Tunks claimed silver with 60.67m.

Seema's journey from motherhood to Commonwealth podium

Seema, one of India's leading discus throwers from Haryana, is also pursuing a PhD in Physical Education at Chaudhary Bansi Lal University in Bhiwani.

Her sporting journey began at an early age after her father, a former Indian Army athlete who competed in basketball and javelin throw, introduced her to athletics.

She is currently coached by her husband Ravinder Kaliramna, also known as Monu Kaliramna, who is a former national-level discus thrower.

After the birth of her son Rudra, Seema took a break from athletics but returned to competition 11 months later while balancing training, motherhood and her doctoral studies.

Seema dedicates Commonwealth medal to husband

Seema won gold at the 2025 National Games and later secured the national title. She also produced a personal best throw of 59.73m at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, which helped her qualify for the Commonwealth Games 2026.

She has represented India at several international competitions, including the Youth Asian Championships, and won gold at the inaugural Khelo India University Games in 2020.

After winning the Commonwealth bronze, Seema credited her husband and coach Ravinder for his support and dedicated the medal to him.

"This was my first Commonwealth Games, and winning a bronze medal makes it even more special. I did not face any major difficulties during the competition. The only challenge was the cold weather because I had to keep warming up repeatedly. Overall, it was a very good competition," she said.

Seema also spoke about the challenges of balancing motherhood with her sporting career and said she could not bring her son to the event despite the emotional difficulty.

She thanked the Athletics Federation of India, Sports Authority of India and her family for their support, adding that her husband's efforts and sacrifices played a major role in her achievement.
