King cobra vs python in Bihar: How a pet dog’s bark alerted family to terrifying 12-foot snake fight

A king cobra and a python turned a quiet Tuesday night into a scene straight out of a wildlife documentary near the Gonouli forest office in the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR), West Champaran, Bihar. The two giant reptiles locked themselves in a fierce battle right outside a family home, sending residents into a panic before a forest department team stepped in and safely carried both snakes back into the forest, a TOI report stated.

The Backyard Turns Into a Battle Arena

The drama unfolded outside the house of Sona Lal Sah, located close to the Gonouli forest office. The family's pet dog's non-stop barking pulled the household outside, where they came face to face with two enormous reptiles wrestling just metres from their front door.

Nitesh Kumar, Sona Lal Sah's son, described the chaos: "We were preparing to sleep when our pet dog started barking continuously. When we came outside, we saw a nearly 12-foot king cobra and an equally large python locked in a fight near the house. As they struggled, they even tried to enter the house. We were terrified," said Nitesh Kumar, son of Sona Lal Sah.

Snakes Rescued By Forest Department Team

Soon, a sizeable crowd of local residents gathered around the house, watching the unusual face-off unfold in real time. Someone alerted the forest department, and help arrived quickly.

Snake rescuer Murari Kumar led the team that reached the spot. Separating a king cobra and a python mid-fight is no small task, but after a tense effort, the rescuers managed to capture both snakes without harm. They later released the reptiles deep inside the VTR forest, far from human settlements.

Why the Snakes Came Visiting

Forest department officials pointed to heavy rainfall and waterlogging inside the forest as the reason behind the sudden reptile activity. When their natural habitat floods, snakes and other wildlife often move toward drier ground, and that sometimes means human neighbourhoods.

Officials have urged residents to resist the urge to play hero. Catching or chasing snakes on their own can be dangerous, they warned, and the smarter move is to call the forest department immediately so trained personnel can handle the rescue safely.
