Jay Singh Rathore scam: How a scamster used fake sister's eye surgery details to raise Rs 1.5 lakh and held 4-hour 'Chai Pe Charcha' online

What began as an emotional appeal for money for his minor girl's eye surgery turned into one of the most discussed controversies on X within hours. A user identified as Jay Singh Rathore had claimed that his 12-year-old sister was at risk of losing her eyesight and appealed for small donations to fund her treatment. Within about 24 hours after the appeal, he claimed to have received more than Rs 1.5 lakh from strangers online. He then removed the payment details, saying the family had received more money than required.

But the story changed dramatically after questions were raised about the medical documents shared with the fundraising post. Shroff Eye Centre later issued a public warning saying someone had allegedly created a fake patient record, prescription and estimate using its letterheads. The original post, which has since been deleted, presented Rathore as a 16-year-old boy seeking help for his younger sister. According to the post, he claimed that his 12-year-old sister had glaucoma and vitreous haemorrhage, and that the family had already spent more than Rs 2.5 lakh on her treatment. He said they had managed to arrange around Rs 50,000 through savings and relatives but still needed money for the next surgery. He appealed to people to contribute even Rs 10 or Rs 20.


The post also included photographs of what were presented as medical reports, hospital documents and an Aadhaar card. The appeal specifically named Shroff Eye Centre in Delhi as the hospital where the girl was being treated. The emotional appeal gained traction quickly.

How did he raise Rs 1.5 lakh?

The post was shared on September 21. By the following day, Rathore claimed that more than Rs 1.5 lakh had been collected.He subsequently said that people should stop sending money because the family had received more than it needed. The payment details were removed from the post. At that point, the incident was being presented by many users as an example of strangers coming together to help someone in distress. Then questions about the documents began spreading.

The biggest development came when Shroff Eye Centre issued a warning about documents allegedly being circulated in its name. The hospital said it had learned that someone had created a fake patient, prescription and estimate sheet using its letterheads and was approaching NGOs and individuals for financial assistance. It urged people to be cautious and share the warning to prevent others from becoming victims.

That statement changed the conversation around Rathore's fundraiser. Users began questioning the authenticity of the medical documents and the identity of the patient mentioned in the appeal. Social-media posts subsequently described the fundraiser as a scam.

However, the original posts have been deleted and much of the discussion is based on user-generated content. The available reports do not establish through an independent investigation every detail of the allegations.

As per reports, Rathore eventually said during the discussions that although he had used his sister's name in the appeal, the money was actually needed because his father was unwell. He reportedly described his actions as a mistake and said he had returned some of the money.

The Spaces attracted substantial attention, with users confronting him directly and asking for refunds. Screenshots of alleged repayments were subsequently shared online. A user also posted a bank-account screenshot that purportedly showed the balance falling from Rs 1,58,282.58 to Rs 1,37,893.58. That screenshot has not been independently verified.

At the same time, he said he had begun returning money to some donors. Because the original fundraising material has been deleted and the conversations took place on social media, individual claims made during the Spaces should be treated as claims rather than independently established facts.
