Jamui: Main accused Nandan Yadav in Bihar minor girl molestation case shot in the leg during police encounter

Nandan Yadav, the main accused in the Jamui minor molestation and assault case, was shot in leg in a police encounter on Tuesday and taken to a hospital for treatment, police said. Yadav suffered a bullet injury to his leg, according to officials. The encounter took place during an operation to arrest him, an ANI report stated. The encounter action came a day after a video showing a class 10 minor girl and her male companion being harassed and molested by a group of man in Jamui went viral on social media.

Police encounter during operation to arrest accused

Police said further details about the circumstances of the encounter and Yadav's condition are awaited. The incident was recorded on camera, and video clips later circulated widely on social media. Yadav is the main accused in a case involving the alleged molestation and assault of a minor girl in Jamui. Police launched an operation after videos of the incident surfaced on social media.

Jamui Bihar Class 10 Girl Harrassment Case

The incident took place on Saturday when the girl went to Marwa Pahad with a male classmate on a scooter after attending coaching classes. While the two were returning in the evening, a group of youths allegedly stopped them and surrounded them. The youths allegedly forced the two students off the scooter, abused them and questioned them.


Videos of the incident showed the youths allegedly harassing the girl and touching her inappropriately. Her male friend was also allegedly manhandled. The two students reportedly tried to escape, but the youths allegedly chased and assaulted them. The ordeal reportedly continued for 15-20 minutes before the students managed to flee.

Two video clips surfaced on social media on Monday, following which police began taking action in the case.

Police register FIR, identify accused

Jamui SP Vishwajit Dayal said the girl and her friend were traced and their statements were recorded. An FIR was registered after the girl submitted a written complaint. “The girl and her friend were traced and their statements were recorded. After receiving a written complaint from the girl, an FIR was registered. All the youths visible in the videos have been identified,” Jamui SP Vishwajit Dayal said.

The SP formed a special investigation team (SIT) headed by SDPO Deepti Monali to investigate the case. Police said seven-eight people were booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act based on the video footage. Three accused were initially taken into custody, while police conducted raids to arrest the others.

Police examine videos and criminal records

Investigators are examining the videos and other evidence to determine the role of each person allegedly involved in the incident. Police are also checking the criminal records, if any, of the accused as part of the investigation. Authorities have started steps to remove the videos from social media and warned people against circulating them further. Police said the circulation of the videos could reveal the identity of the minor.

Political reaction

The incident also led to a political response. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, targeted the Samrat Choudhary-led Bihar government over the law-and-order situation. BJP leaders rejected the allegations. The National Commission for Women and the Bihar State Women's Commission has also taken cognisance of the case. NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the Bihar DGP seeking action against the accused and a detailed action-taken report within seven days.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said strict action would be taken against all those involved in the incident and that a case had been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.


Addressing a press conference, Chaudhary thanked the media for highlighting incident and said the government would ensure the strict punishment would be given to guilty. He said the strictest action would be taken against those who made the video, circulated it and were involved in the alleged incident.
