Indian professional quits MNC job in Canada after 6 years despite Canadian citizenship, here’s why she returned to India

Preeti Bisnik is giving up her job and life in Canada for now, choosing instead to return to India and spend more time with her ageing parents. After six years in the country, the Deloitte professional said she has voluntarily stepped away from work so she can prioritise her family, health and a break from her career.

In an Instagram video posted on September 22, Preeti announced that she had resigned from her job and was preparing to move back to India. She said she currently wants to spend time with her parents, work on her health and take a break from her professional life before deciding what comes next.

Preeti also clarified that her departure from Deloitte was voluntary. She was not laid off and said her manager had offered her time off with the possibility of returning to the company later. She added that her decision to leave Canada was not linked to her employment status. As a Canadian citizen, she can continue to live there even without a job, but she has chosen to return to India for personal reasons.

‘The biggest reason is my parents’

For Preeti, the central factor behind the decision is her parents. She said both are ageing and that her mother is now dealing with difficulties related to her eyesight and mobility.

She explained that staying in Canada while her parents grew older could eventually leave her with regrets about not spending enough time with them. She therefore decided that being physically present with them was more important at this stage of her life.

Preeti has also studied nutrition during her time in Canada and said she hopes to use that knowledge to help her parents with their nutrition, fitness and strength training.

For now, she does not have a fixed career plan for her return. She said she may decide next year what she wants to do with her career and life, but her immediate priority is to focus on her parents and herself.

Her own health journey also influenced the decision

Preeti's decision to take a break from work is also connected to her fitness journey. She said she weighed around 78 kg when she moved from India to Canada. Over the next six years, her weight increased to nearly 100 kg.

She has since lost around 10 kg through sustained effort and now wants to spend more time focusing on her health and fitness. She said she also wants an extended break from the sedentary, computer-based work routine she has followed for years.

Her return to India, therefore, represents both a family decision and a personal reset, with her attention currently centred on her parents and her own well-being.

Why she does not plan to bring her parents to Canada

Preeti's announcement led some users to ask why she could not instead bring her parents to Canada. In response, she explained that her mother has glaucoma and that a long flight could be difficult given her health and mobility issues. Her father is also elderly.

Another user asked whether Preeti was her parents' only child. She responded that she has brothers living in the US and London.

Despite the questions, much of the reaction to her decision was supportive. Several users praised her for prioritising her parents over her job and life abroad.

“Parents are more important than any country or a job,” one user wrote.

Another commented, “If your reason is your parents, you are already blessed and you will find work 200% there too. As blessings work always better than any luck .. all the best.”

A third user wrote, “Love it! All the best and wishing you and ur parents well!!! It takes alot of will power to make such a decision. Hope the transition is stress free and everything u hoped for!!”

“You will thank yourself forever. Trust me it will be the best decision. Hope you get success in all your plans. So glad you could move bac,” another user added.

For now, Preeti says she is choosing time with her parents and a focus on her health over returning immediately to a conventional career path. Her plans beyond the coming year, she said, will be decided later.
