In 1870, a book was borrowed from a library in Australia. 150 years later, it was found behind a fireplace

Somewhere in a small coastal town in Australia, someone borrowed a library book, never brought it back, and got on with their life. That was around the 1870s. Last week, the book finally made its way home, pulled out of a bricked-up fireplace during a home renovation, nearly a century and a half late.

A library book returns after 150 years

The book is "Antiquities of Athens," printed in 1858, and it belongs to the public library in Kiama, a seaside town south of Sydney. A homeowner doing renovations found it wedged inside an old tea chest that had been sealed behind a fireplace wall. He handed it in last week, water-stained but very much intact.

Library manager Michelle Hudson says nothing quite like this has crossed her desk before. She follows library circles on social media, where a 30- or 40-year-old return is treated as a notable find, usually surfacing when someone is clearing out a relative's estate. A book missing since the 1800s is in an entirely different league.

The overdue fine could be worth Rs 18.7 lakh

Out of curiosity, the library actually worked out what the fine would be. Printed inside the cover was the original penalty: three British pence for every week the book sat unreturned. Run that rate forward using the borrowing terms from when the library opened its doors in 1872, adjust for inflation, and the number lands somewhere around 28,000 Australian dollars — roughly Rs 18.7 lakh.

Nobody is actually being asked to pay it, mostly because nobody can say who owes it. The ledger that once recorded every book taken out of the Kiama library, and by whom, has been lost to time. Whoever walked off with book number 506 took the secret with them.

The missing ledger holds the biggest clue

"There's nothing in the book that tells us who the last borrower was," Hudson said, adding that the missing ledger has left the library with what she called a genuine gap in the trail.

There's a small, almost funny possibility buried in the library's old rulebook, though. Back then, you couldn't borrow a new book until you'd returned your last one and cleared any debt on it. A household could take out no more than three books at a time, and only if at least six people living there were confirmed to be able to read. Anyone who turned up drunk wasn't lent a book at all.

Did the borrower hide the book to avoid the fine?

Hudson thinks that might explain the whole mystery. Maybe the borrower simply couldn't square things up, or didn't want to, and quietly let the book disappear rather than face the librarian.

Going by its condition, and by how the library's records have been pieced together, staff believe the book went missing within just a few years of the library opening — meaning it likely spent well over a century tucked away near that chimney, slowly taking on water damage, while the world outside moved through two world wars, the moon landing, and the invention of the internet.

The 150-year-old book won't be borrowed again

It won't be going back into circulation. The book will now be kept on permanent display as part of Kiama Library's local history collection, safely out of reach of overdue notices for good.

As Hudson put it, once was enough: nobody's keen to wait another 150 years to see it again.
