Some of history's biggest discoveries have come about by accident. One of the most enduring stories in the world of fabric care traces the origins of dry cleaning to an unexpected household mishap in 19th-century France.

According to historical accounts, a simple spill involving lamp fuel led to the discovery that certain liquids could remove grease and stains without the need for water. What began as an everyday accident would eventually lay the foundation for the global dry-cleaning industry.

How an accidental spill led to the idea of dry cleaning

The best-known account dates back to around 1825 and centres on Jean-Baptiste Jolly, a French dye-works operator.


According to a monograph published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) titled Dry Cleaning, Some Chlorinated Solvents and Other Industrial Chemicals, a servant in Jolly's household accidentally spilled the contents of a lamp onto a stained tablecloth.

As the liquid evaporated, the stained areas appeared noticeably cleaner than the rest of the fabric.

Although the solvent used was most likely camphene rather than modern kerosene, the incident demonstrated something remarkable for the time, that certain non-water solvents could dissolve grease and remove stains effectively.

The unexpected result is widely regarded as one of the earliest inspirations behind what later became known as dry cleaning.

In the early 19th century, Jean Baptiste Jolly developed a method of cleaning fabrics using petroleum-based solvents such as kerosene and gasoline.

He went on to establish what is widely recognised as the first commercial dry-cleaning business in Paris in 1845.

According to popular historical accounts, the idea originated after an accidental spill in 1825, when the contents of an oil lamp fell onto a tablecloth and left the stained area noticeably cleaner.

The lamp fuel is believed to have been camphene, rather than kerosene. During the 19th century, benzene-based solvents also came into use for fabric cleaning, and the process was commonly referred to as "French cleaning" or "chemical cleaning."

Why the discovery was so significant

At a time when washing fabrics almost always meant using soap and water, the accidental cleaning effect of the spilled lamp fuel suggested an entirely different approach.

Instead of soaking garments in water, oily solvents could dissolve grease and dirt while helping preserve delicate fabrics that might otherwise shrink or become damaged.

The incident encouraged further experimentation with non-water cleaning methods and gradually evolved into a commercial service.

Early dry cleaning relied on highly flammable solvents

According to the IARC monograph, the first generation of dry-cleaning businesses experimented with a range of petroleum-based solvents, including camphene, benzene soap, benzine, naphtha and gasoline.

While these liquids proved effective at removing stains, they posed a serious fire hazard because they were highly flammable.

As the industry expanded, reducing the risk of fires became one of its biggest challenges.

The breakthrough that made dry cleaning safer

The search for safer alternatives continued for decades. The IARC notes that a major turning point came in 1928, when W. J. Stoddard introduced a low-flammability dry-cleaning solvent. The innovation significantly reduced the fire risks associated with earlier cleaning methods and was quickly adopted across the industry.

It marked the transition from a hazardous cleaning process to a more practical commercial service.

How dry cleaning evolved over the years

Research published in Frontiers in Public Health explains that early dry-cleaning operations relied heavily on hydrocarbon-based solvents such as gasoline, kerosene, benzene and turpentine because they were particularly effective at dissolving oily stains.

Over time, however, many businesses shifted to chlorinated solvents to reduce the danger of fires.

While these newer chemicals improved safety in one respect, they also introduced fresh concerns relating to indoor air quality, worker safety and environmental health, prompting stricter regulations and continued research into safer alternatives.

A household accident that transformed an industry

What started as an accidental spill on a tablecloth in a French household eventually changed the way delicate fabrics are cleaned around the world.

The incident highlighted the cleaning power of non-water solvents and inspired generations of innovation in fabric care. Nearly two centuries later, the story of Jean-Baptiste Jolly remains one of history's best-known examples of how an unexpected accident can lead to a lasting scientific and commercial breakthrough.
