Hyderabad weather today: Will the city see heavy rain as IMD issues alert for 16 Telangana districts?

Hyderabadis are once again keeping one eye on the sky and the other on the traffic app. After a stretch of dry, humid days, the city has been drenched twice in the past 48 hours, and the India Meteorological Department has sounded the alarm yet again.

The districts under the red flag for heavy rain, anywhere between 64.5mm and 115.5mm, are

Hyderabad city itself isn't on that specific list, but that doesn't mean it's off the hook. A separate advisory has widened the net, an orange alert covers Telangana with thunderstorms and moderate rain expected in specific districts, where up to 5mm of rain per hour along with gusty winds under 40 kmph could hit. Add to that a yellow alert already sitting over the Cyberabad belt, and you get a fairly messy picture for anyone trying to plan their commute today.

If Tuesday's numbers are anything to go by. Telangana's wettest patch was up north, Jayashankar district recorded the state's highest rainfall at 196mm on Tuesday, with Jagtial, Nirmal, Peddapalli, Mulugu, Mancherial and Nizamabad also seeing heavy downpours. Within the city limits, Musheerabad bore the brunt of it. Hyderabad's highest rainfall figure of 54.5mm was logged in Musheerabad, with Shaikpet, Tirumalagiri, Golkonda and Khairatabad also reporting significant rain. If you were stuck near Tank Bund or the Secretariat on Tuesday evening, you already know this part of the story, waterlogged stretches, crawling traffic, the usual monsoon chaos.

There's also a slightly alarming voice in the mix. T Balaji, the independent forecaster who runs the popular "Telangana Weatherman" account and has built a reputation for calling these systems early, went further than the official line. He warned of extremely flooding rain across various districts between July 29 and 30, projecting that cumulative rainfall could touch 300 to 450mm at a few spots in north Telangana over 36 hours. That's the kind of number that turns streets into rivers, so if you live or work in the northern belt, it's worth keeping tabs on local updates through the day rather than assuming things will simply blow over.

What' the weather forecast for Hyderabad today?

Here's the slightly better news for the city. Rain is expected to continue into Thursday, but in fewer parts of the city compared with the last couple of days. Temperatures should hold fairly steady, with a high near 30°C and a low around 22°C, and while waterlogging and slick roads are likely to return, the IMD hasn't flagged major traffic snarls or drainage failures for today the way it did earlier this week. Mornings are likely to stay overcast with intermittent light showers rather than another Tuesday-style downpour. The city is expected to remain cloudy with light rain likely to continue through the morning hours.

Weather Hyderabad Today: Should you be worried about your commute?

Traffic police aren't taking chances. Following the heavy rains, authorities advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, as rain combined with peak-hour traffic had already slowed vehicular movement considerably. A few practical things worth keeping in mind if you're heading out:

• Avoid low-lying stretches you already know flood easily, Tank Bund, parts of the Old City, and areas around Musheerabad have all seen standing water this week.
• Keep an eye on open manholes near waterlogged patches, especially after dark.
• If your building or society has faced power dips during past storms, charge your devices and keep a torch handy, short outages tied to rain have been reported in a few pockets.
• Give yourself extra time for any commute between 5pm and 8pm, when rain has consistently overlapped with peak traffic this week.

The weather system driving all this is linked to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, and forecasters expect the rain to taper gradually rather than switch off overnight. Southern districts, Hyderabad included, are likely to see comparatively lighter spells over the coming days than the north, where the heavy alert remains in force. Whether that holds will depend on how the low-pressure system tracks, something the IMD will keep updating through its nowcasts.
