Curious Case of the Vanishing Jewellery: Rats caught stealing gold from shop in Tumkuru, Karnataka

For a few nerve-wracking days this week, a small-town jewellery shop found itself in the middle of a mystery straight out of a detective novel, minus the detective, and minus, as it turned out, any human culprit at all. It began with a routine stock count. Ten gold rings and two chains, gone. No broken locks, no signs of forced entry, nothing out of place. For a shop owner, few things trigger panic quite like missing gold, and this one was no exception.

"Everyone started wondering whether a customer had taken them, but there was no evidence of that either. We couldn't understand how this had happened," Vishwas, the shop's owner, told PTI, recalling the chaos that followed.

When the staff pulled up the CCTV footage an watched they found nothing. No suspicious figures lurking near the counters, no one reaching where they shouldn't. By every visual account, the gold had simply vanished into thin air.

Rats Stealing Gold

It was only when someone noticed a second, stranger detail that the case cracked open: the little price tags that hang off each piece, the ones listing the exact weight, were missing too. And that single detail changed everything.

"We thought that if it was a thief, they wouldn't take the tags; they would only take the jewellery. So we decided to search again," Vishwas explained. After all, no human burglar in the history of jewellery theft has ever paused mid-heist to grab the paperwork.

So the team went back to the footage, this time scanning the quiet, empty hours of the previous night. And there it was, at roughly 4:30 in the morning: a rat, calmly trotting off with a ring clutched in its mouth, as if it owned the place.

"That's when we realised it was the rat's doing," Vishwas said. "It had made a hole in one place and created a path from there to another area." Following that rodent-made trail, the staff began finding pieces scattered along the route — rings and chains that had apparently slipped out of the rat's grip mid-transit, abandoned mid-heist by its own four-legged thief.

By the end of the search, every single item was recovered. All ten rings, both chains — safe, if a little worse for wear after their unplanned overnight adventure through a rodent's private tunnel network.

It's the kind of story that sounds too odd to be true, yet plays out more often than people realise. Shiny objects, tiny gaps in old buildings, and a rodent with expensive taste — it's a combination shopkeepers across the country know all too well, even if this one ended with a laugh rather than a loss.

For Vishwas and his staff, the whole episode has already become the shop's favourite story to tell customers — proof that sometimes, the most baffling mysteries have the most unexpectedly small solutions.
