Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh scripted history at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow by winning silver in the men's 10,000m event, becoming the first Indian ever to secure a podium finish in the discipline. His medal came after a carefully planned race strategy, patience through challenging conditions and a powerful final-lap sprint.

Gulveer clocked 27:49.78 to finish just behind Australia's Ky Robinson, who won gold in 27:48.93. Isle of Man's David Mullarkey secured bronze, while established distance-running nations Kenya and Uganda missed out on the podium.

How Gulveer Singh turned patience into a historic silver

Racing in heavy rain and on a waterlogged track, Gulveer avoided an early aggressive approach and stayed with the leading pack through most of the event. The Indian runner focused on conserving energy while remaining in medal contention.

As the race entered its final stages, Gulveer positioned himself among the front runners. When the bell signalled the final lap, he was placed third before producing a strong finishing burst to overtake a rival and claim the silver medal.

His tactical awareness and closing speed helped him secure a historic result in one of the Commonwealth Games' toughest track events.

Before Gulveer's achievement, no Indian athlete had ever won a medal in the men's 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games.

The performance marked another major milestone for the national record holder, who has emerged as one of India's leading long-distance runners in recent years.

How Harjinder Kaur secured silver in weightlifting

India also added another silver medal on Tuesday through Harjinder Kaur in the women's 69kg weightlifting category.

Harjinder produced a career-best performance with a total lift of 227kg, including 101kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk. She finished behind Canada's Charlotte Simoneau, who claimed gold with a total of 235kg.

The Indian weightlifter broke the Commonwealth Games snatch record twice during the competition and secured her second consecutive Commonwealth Games medal after winning bronze at Birmingham 2022.
