Ceiling fans are one of the most useful appliances in Indian homes, especially during the hot and humid months. But while they keep rooms cool and comfortable, their blades can quickly collect dust, hair, grease and other particles. If left unattended, that layer of dirt can eventually fall onto furniture, beds and floors whenever the fan is switched on.

1. Turn Off the Fan Before Cleaning


Safety should always come first. Switch off the fan and, ideally, turn off the power from the switchboard before you begin. Wait until the blades have completely stopped moving.

2. Use an Old Pillowcase for Dusty Blades

One of the easiest ways to clean a dusty ceiling fan is with an old pillowcase. Place the pillowcase over one blade and gently wipe the blade from the centre towards the tip. The dust will collect inside the pillowcase instead of falling all over the floor or furniture.

3. Try a Microfiber Cloth

For regular cleaning, a dry microfiber cloth works well for removing loose dust. Unlike some rough fabrics, microfiber can trap fine particles instead of simply moving them around.

4. Remove Stubborn Dirt With Mild Soap Solution

If the blades have accumulated grime, mix a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid with water. Dip a microfiber cloth into the solution and wring it out thoroughly.

5. Don't Forget the Motor Housing

Dust can also accumulate around the fan's motor housing, canopy and other visible parts. Use a dry microfiber cloth or soft brush to gently remove this dust.

6. Keep the Surrounding Area Clean

Even a freshly cleaned fan can become dusty quickly if the surrounding room has a lot of dust. Regularly vacuum or mop floors, clean curtains and dust furniture to reduce the amount of airborne dirt.
