Bhogapuram Airport opening date: How new airport, built in record time, could boost the entire North Andhra region

North Andhra Pradesh is set for a significant developmental milestone with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to inaugurate the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district on August 1, the state government announced on Monday. Built at a cost of nearly Rs 4,727 crore and completed in a record 31 months, the airport is ready to begin commercial operations and is being viewed as a transformational asset for the entire North Andhra region rather than merely an infrastructure project.

Among India's fastest-built greenfield airports

The airport has been developed to international standards as part of a broader vision to position Visakhapatnam among globally developed cities. It ranks among the fastest-completed greenfield international airports in the country, having been finished nearly five months ahead of schedule. The facility has already obtained its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, along with the necessary safety, fire and environmental clearances.

Capacity to grow from six million to 40 million passengers

In its first phase, the airport has been designed to accommodate six million passengers annually, with a master plan allowing expansion to 40 million passengers in the future. Officials say the project will play a key role in driving economic growth, tourism, industrial investment, exports, logistics and the aerospace and defence sectors across the erstwhile Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts.

Built under public-private partnership across 2,700 acres

The project has been developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement, using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer model. The integrated development spans 2,703.26 acres, comprising the airport itself on 2,203.32 acres, a 500-acre aviation hub and a 136.63-acre aviation university and EduCity, alongside airside infrastructure, commercial and residential zones and approach roads.

Runway built to handle wide-body aircraft

A central feature of the airport is its 3,800-metre Code-E runway, capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777, Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Airbus A330 and Airbus A340. The facility is also equipped with advanced airfield lighting, navigation aids and communication, navigation and surveillance systems to support both domestic and international flight operations.

Terminal features modern passenger technology

The terminal is fitted with advanced passenger processing systems, including contact boarding bridges, a Common Use Passenger Processing System, self-service baggage drop and check-in facilities, smart surveillance, access control and an integrated operational control and monitoring centre. These features are intended to improve both passenger convenience and operational efficiency.

Cargo terminal to boost region's export ecosystem

Officials said the airport is expected to significantly strengthen North Andhra's export capabilities through a cargo terminal with an annual handling capacity of 25,000 metric tonnes, including temperature-controlled cold chain facilities for pharmaceuticals, marine products and other perishable goods. The airport is expected to integrate with Visakhapatnam Port and regional industrial corridors to emerge as a major air cargo and logistics hub on India's east coast.

Sustainable design reflects regional identity

Around 30 percent of the airport's water needs will be met through recycled water, and the facility has been constructed in line with LEED Platinum environmental standards. The terminal's architecture draws inspiration from a flying fish, symbolising the Bay of Bengal and the region's maritime heritage, while traditional Rangoli patterns feature in its roof and ceiling design.

Aviation hub and university planned nearby

The state government also plans to develop a 500-acre aviation hub adjacent to the airport, envisioned as a next-generation, net-zero aerospace and defence ecosystem expected to draw around Rs 20,000 crore in investment and generate over 60,000 direct and 1.2 lakh indirect jobs. Alongside this, an aviation university and EduCity spread over more than 136 acres will focus on aviation, aerospace, defence, drones and emerging technologies. This initiative is expected to attract investments of up to Rs 5,000 crore, host around 9,000 students and train 4,000 executive education participants annually in partnership with national and international institutions.

State government invested over Rs 1,500 crore in supporting infrastructure

The Andhra Pradesh government has invested Rs 1,583 crore in enabling infrastructure for the project, covering land acquisition (Rs 944 crore), water supply (Rs 75 crore), power supply (Rs 97 crore), funded works (Rs 134 crore), connectivity roads (Rs 301 crore), additional road connectivity (Rs 3.25 crore) and irrigation canal works (Rs 27 crore). Approach roads and other supporting infrastructure have also been developed to improve air connectivity across North Andhra, coastal Andhra and neighbouring states.
