Anand Mahindra praises Operation Safed Sagar series, hails IAF innovation

Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has praised Operation Safed Sagar, saying the series reminded him of the courage and sacrifices of India’s armed forces during the Kargil conflict. In a lengthy post on X that has received nearly three lakh views, Mahindra explained why he recommended watching the series over the weekend and highlighted aspects of the Indian Air Force's campaign that he said were previously unfamiliar to him.

Mahindra thanked the makers and Netflix for commissioning the series, saying he was moved and inspired by its story and emotional portrayal. He also defended the production against criticism of its Computer-Generated Imagery and performances, saying he found the actors competent and credible.

Mahindra highlights IAF's role in Kargil

Mahindra said he wished there had been more films and series about India's armed forces when he was growing up, particularly productions showing the military's role in the country's various conflicts.

He recalled that Hollywood war films were a major part of what he watched growing up and said such movies contributed to American pride and self-belief, even when they took liberties with historical accuracy.

While Mahindra said he was familiar with the bravery of soldiers such as Captain Vikram Batra and the role of the Bofors gun during the Kargil War, he admitted that he had previously known little about the Indian Air Force's contribution to the conflict.

He said Operation Safed Sagar showed that the IAF's role involved not only extraordinary valour but also ingenuity and rapid improvisation, which he described as a quality now associated with Indian innovation.

IAF technicians improvised amid sanctions

Mahindra specifically highlighted the IAF's use of Mirage 2000 aircraft, Israeli Litening laser-designation pods and Paveway II guidance kits during the conflict.

He said the combination had not yet become an established combat capability when the Kargil conflict began. According to Mahindra, the 1998 sanctions prevented the procurement of a required component from abroad, prompting IAF technicians to engineer their own solution.

He described this as “denial-driven innovation”, pointing to the ability of the technicians to develop an alternative despite restrictions on obtaining the required component.

Mahindra links war innovation to AI debate

Mahindra also connected the lessons of Operation Safed Sagar to current discussions about artificial intelligence and the growing role of machines.

He argued that the series offered a reminder that human ingenuity remains important even in warfare, where decisions can be made within seconds and lives depend on them.

As Mahindra encouraged people to watch the series, he described the heroes of Operation Safed Sagar as his “#MondayMotivation”. He also paid a special tribute to Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, who was killed during the Kargil War in 1999.

Another praised the series for giving the IAF greater recognition, particularly for its combination of improvisation and courage, while paying tribute to Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja and the pilots involved in the missions.

A separate commenter highlighted Mahindra's reference to IAF technicians developing their own solution after sanctions blocked access to a component, describing such field improvisation as something that is rarely included in conventional war stories.

Another user focused on the series' depiction of GPS manipulation and questioned what had happened to India's own NavIC navigation system, arguing that the issue had continued over time.
