FBI probes claim that its employee data was stolen

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating hackers' claims that they broke into the bureau's systems and stole thousands of current and former employees' data, the bureau said in a statement Wednesday.

A group known as ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the hack on Tuesday. The gang said it had attacked the FBI in retaliation for statements the bureau had made accusing it of making exaggerated claims in the past. One of the hackers, identifying themselves as "Shiny," shared samples of allegedly stolen FBI documents.

The documents included health reports on FBI employees, which outlined medical conditions and prior mental health issues of named personnel. Shiny claimed the group had obtained information on some 56,000 current and former employees, included in a trove of up to 3 terabytes of stolen data.
