CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a joint lawsuit against the Trump administration on September 21, days after their reporters were barred from the White House. The three outlets say the administration revoked their journalists’ credentials because Trump objected to the content of their reporting. They are calling the move an illegal action and “a blatant violation” of the First Amendment. The reporters’ White House access was cut off over the weekend. The White House had said the outlets were being barred because of what Trump described as “fake news.” But the news organizations argue that the government cannot selectively exclude journalists simply because the president dislikes their coverage.
