Taylor Swift’s new song ‘Patient Zero’ takes aim at toxic relationships as she sings about walking away, toxic love and healing

Taylor Swift has a new song, and this one comes with a warning about a toxic relationship. The pop superstar released “Patient Zero” on Friday, Sept. 25, as the lead track from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. The surprise expanded edition of her 2025 album includes four new songs.

In “Patient Zero,” Swift appears to tell the story of a woman reaching out after getting involved with the same kind of man Swift says she once knew. The song turns into something like a conversation between two women who have both seen what happens when a charming person becomes toxic, as per a report by People.

“If you wanna party with somebody / who might know about the devil on his shoulder under his halo,” Swift sings. She then offers a way out: “But if you’re sick of him, I got you / I was patient zero.”

A song about knowing when to walk away

Swift makes it clear that the narrator has a past with the man at the center of the story.

“I’ve gotta be honest, / I’ve been expecting your call,” she sings. She says she has heard there is “trouble in paradise,” but she also makes it clear that she does not want to tell someone else what choice to make.

The message becomes stronger later in the song. Swift sings about being someone who “lost his games but won the race,” before describing a woman who knows she is “more than just the chase.”

That leads into the idea behind the title. The narrator has already been through the pain, done the healing and walked away.

“So if you wanna kick it, then I’m with it, I’ve been there,” Swift sings. “Felt the reeling, done the healing, said the curses and prayers.”

Swift later explained where the song came from. In a statement released to radio, she said she was spending time with friends when one friend shared that the new girlfriend of an ex had contacted her for advice.

The question quickly turned into a group conversation. Several friends said they had been through similar situations and shared their own stories. That experience became “Patient Zero.”

New music, a new video and plenty of Swiftie clues

Swift first announced the single on Sept. 22 after teasing fans with a countdown and a series of clues. She told fans the song would arrive on Sept. 25 and made it available for pre-order on her website for 24 hours.

A day before the release, Swift also shared a 13-second preview of the music video. The video stars Swift with Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.

Fans have already been searching for clues. Swift changed the “o” letters in her Instagram bio to zeroes, writing, “And, baby, that’s sh0w business f0r y0u. ❤️‍��”

“Patient Zero” is one of four new songs on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. The other tracks are “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.”



Swift said the songs were written after she traveled to Sweden with longtime collaborators Max Martin and Shellback. She said the trip was meant to celebrate the success of The Life of a Showgirl, but they ended up writing more music.

The expanded edition arrives as Swift prepares to receive the first Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. The award recognizes artists whose work behind the camera has helped shape music videos and visual storytelling.

For Swift, “Patient Zero” adds another chapter to a year already filled with new music, new visuals and plenty for fans to decode.
