Social Security October 2026 payments: Why SSI gets two checks, the calendar twist behind the second deposit and what the 2027 COLA could change
October brings the next round of Social Security payments after the Sept. 23 deposit. Regular benefits will arrive on Oct. 14, 21 and 28, based on birth dates. SSI follows a different calendar, with payments on Oct. 1 and Oct. 30. The latter is No...

October 2026 Social Security payments arrive on three Wednesdays, while SSI recipients see two deposits because November’s payment comes early.
That second SSI payment can look like an extra check at first glance. It isn't. The October 30 payment is actually the November benefit, moved forward because November 1 falls on a Sunday.
Social Security payments 2026: When will October checks arrive?
The next regular Wednesday Social Security payment is scheduled for October 14, 2026. It is for beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 1st and 10th of the month. The following payments are scheduled for October 21 and October 28. Beneficiaries born from the 11th through the 20th generally receive their payment on October 21, while those born from the 21st through the 31st are scheduled for October 28.
That Wednesday schedule covers many people receiving retirement, survivors or disability benefits. It does not cover everyone on Social Security, though. People who began receiving benefits before May 1997, as well as people receiving both Social Security and SSI, can follow different payment rules.
Why does the October payment schedule matter?
A payment date is more than a line on a government calendar when the benefit is part of a household's regular cash flow.A few days can determine when someone pays a utility bill or moves money between accounts. It can also affect how a person plans spending at the beginning and end of a month.
October is particularly easy to misread because Social Security and SSI operate on different schedules.
For many Social Security beneficiaries, the payment is tied to the person's birth date and arrives on a Wednesday. SSI generally works differently: the federal payment is scheduled for the first day of the month.
When that first day lands on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment is moved to the previous business day. That rule is what creates October's two-SSI-payment situation.
Why will SSI recipients get two payments in October?
SSI recipients are scheduled to receive their October benefit on Thursday, October 1.Then another SSI payment is scheduled for Friday, October 30.
The second deposit is the November benefit. November 1, 2026, falls on a Sunday, so the SSA moves that payment to the preceding business day, October 30.
That means the two October deposits represent two different benefit months:
| Date | What the payment represents |
|---|---|
| Oct. 1, 2026 | October SSI benefit |
| Oct. 30, 2026 | November SSI benefit |
The timing can make a bank account show two SSI deposits in one calendar month, but the recipient has not received an extra month's worth of benefits. The payment has simply crossed from the following month's benefit period into October because of the weekend.
This is also why recipients should be careful when budgeting around the apparent second check. Money arriving early does not mean there is an additional benefit available for the month ahead.
Who gets Social Security on Oct. 14, 21 or 28?
For beneficiaries covered by the standard Wednesday schedule, the October dates follow a familiar pattern. Those born from the 1st through the 10th are scheduled for October 14. Birthdays from the 11th through the 20th correspond to October 21. Those born from the 21st through the 31st correspond to October 28.
There are exceptions.
People who were receiving Social Security on or before April 30, 1997, follow a different payment schedule. The SSA also has separate rules for people receiving both Social Security and SSI.
That is why the official SSA calendar is more useful than assuming everyone receives a check on the same Wednesday.
What about the 2027 Social Security COLA?
The October payment calendar is separate from another event that will draw attention later in the month: the announcement of the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment. The SSA says the next COLA will be announced in October 2026. The agency calculates the annual adjustment using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W. The calculation compares the third-quarter CPI-W data with the corresponding period used for the previous COLA determination.
As of September 2026, the 2027 figure has not yet been officially announced. Any percentage circulating before the announcement is therefore an estimate rather than the final COLA.
The last confirmed adjustment was the 2.8% COLA for 2026. The increase applied to Social Security benefits beginning in January 2026, while increased SSI payments began with the December 31, 2025 payment.
What should Social Security and SSI recipients remember in October?
The simplest way to read October's calendar is to separate the programs. For many Social Security beneficiaries, payments arrive on October 14, October 21 or October 28, depending on the beneficiary's birth date. Other beneficiaries follow different schedules.
For SSI recipients, October 1 is the October payment. The October 30 payment is November's benefit, moved forward because November 1 falls on a Sunday.
October will also bring the official 2027 COLA announcement, once the required inflation data have been incorporated into the statutory calculation. Until then, the payment dates are known, but the next annual increase is not.
